I hear that kind of trans has a bad rep. Isn’t it all on newer vehicles now? What’s bad about cvt?

I know at least some have a bad rep. I don't know if they all do, or if the ones with the bad rep got fixed.
If you already have one, check for recalls and hope it doesn't give out after the warranty period.
I've had a couple of belt driven cars, but never had a CVT which are more complicated. I don't know if there is anything inherently wrong with CVTs. It might just be a bad design.
I don't know if all new cars have it, but I seriously doubt it. Car manufactures are under constant pressure to improve fuel economy. CVT supposedly saves some fuel. I don't know how much though. Car manufacturers go to great lengths to improve fuel economy even a very small amount (it all adds up).
I did some design work for GM in the 80s. There was a small case that held some electronics. It was made from aluminum alloy. One of the engineers was actually considering making it out of titanium to reduce weight. I'd be surprised it it reduced the weight by more than a few grams. Fortunately he didn't do it. But it shows how much pressure they are under to reduce weight (for fuel economy).
It's a cheat. The transmission is where the driver's will meets the engine's power. A CVT, by being all digital, creates a disconnect. You're not working with the machine anymore; you're working with a ghost. It's a loss of connection, a betrayal of the mechanical soul.
They are weaker than a traditional automatic, but it seems to be the future for small cars. If you really want to extend its life change the transmission fluid every 30k and hopefully you can get at least 150k out of it if you're lucky.
