I got a slightly used one from, a place where I used to work. I doubt it was 5 years old when I got it and I've only had it about 5 years. I don't know what kind it is but a friend of mine said it was easily a $2000 computer. It has a remote control with it.
I've had almost no problems with it since I got it except, in the past year, the DVD drive has been giving me a LOT of shit when I wanna play a DVD in it!! CD's, it has no problems with but, with DVD's it's a pile a shit!!
These are brand new DVD's that played perfectly fine when I bought them a year ago but, now, I put them in and the fucker makes all these grunting noises and what have you, for at least 5:00 and then it refuses to even recognize the disc is there! Sometimes I have to eject and push it back in 4 or 5 times, going through that 5:00 long dance each time, before it FINALLY starts playing the motherfucker!!
Sometimes, when it finally DOES play them, it'll go so far in and then start stuttering or freezing. After a moment, that stops and a while farther in, it does it again! The only time I watch DVD's on it is when I'm eating but, it's MAJOR pain in the fucking ass to have to deal with that SAME shit EVERY time I wanna start using it!! Even if it played the DVD a few hours before, it'll still make me go through that fucking dance over and over again!!
Is it the drive, the computer, the OS or has the lens gone bad on it?
Dang dude, sounds like you're having some major issues with the DVD drive on that HP laptop. A few things it could be:
- The drive itself is probably getting old and worn out after 5+ years. DVD/CD drives don't last forever, especially if you use it a lot.
- Could be the lens inside is dirty or scratched up so it's having trouble reading the discs.
- Possible the connections where the drive connects to the motherboard are loose or corroded. Happens over time vibrating around in there.
- The software could need an update too, sometimes that helps the drive perform better.
A few things I'd try - use compressed air to blow out any dust/grime from the lens and casing openings. You can also try carefully wiping the lens with a microfiber cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
Check all the cables inside making sure they're fully snapped in too.
Might also see if there's any driver or firmware updates for the specific drive model online.
If all else fails, you may just need to replace the drive soon unfortunately. Annoying when they crap out like that! Hopefully some of those fixes help get you up and running a bit longer at least bro.

Have you looked at the disks? Have you tried redownloading drivers? They do get corrupted over time.
This may help.
I assumed you're windows.
Maybe you should consider bringing it in if those don't help.

It really does sound like a hardware issue. You can go on HP's website and see about buying a new one It should be an easy swap/, The new one might require a new driver.
Yes I do from my college
