Trending & News I wasn't sure at first then quickly caught on before reading the comments. I won't look at the fruit the same now. I also used to be triggered, but now I barley put the fear into imagining it. I still feel for victims though.
Same here. I used to be triggered as well but it doesn't bother me much anymore. But I do still feel for victims as well.
Im fine with it. Some people get triggered when either proper term is used and use replacement words. I dont see it as any different than using replacement words for curse words.
That's true. I'm just not sure if it would be offensive to those that have gone through it. Like it takes away from what they have been through. It has happened to me but it doesn't bother me much. I'm just not sure if using grape makes it sound less serious to the victims.
Some survivors use it themselves. A lot of it, though, is just using it to avoid trigger warnings for those in the comments who have personally experienced either of those or know someone close who has gone through it. I think for sexual assault they just use SA though, but suicide and rape are just a single word so it's hard to just single letter those and hence the replacement words.
Oh ok. I see what you are saying. I guess it probably would be needed for some that it may trigger.

I think censorship on YouTube has gone way too far because as far as I can tell that's where this started. This is sanitizing language and it's gross. Rape is a word that is foul because the deed is foul. It's a word that's supposed to feel filthy in your mouth when you say it. When you censor speech like this you downplay it and rape isn't something that should be downplayed because it illegitimizes the victims and its disgusting. Rape happens, survivors deserve to be heard and this is a problem.
Prettying up language is like sweeping dust under the rug. The problems not gone or addressed, just hidden. What we really need are more safe spaces for woman like womans only gyms and I think there should be a push to encourage woman to take self-defense classes. I also think they should carry pepper spray or a gun etc. If I ever had an SO I would want her to have means for self defense in some capacity. Safety of my SO is important to me and I'd feel a lot better if my partner did these things.
It doesn’t make sense to censor words. Just like with your example, people will just substitute a different word for whatever is being censored, and attach the same meaning to it, so you’re still recognizing what is meant and are thinking of the exact same thing as the real word.
My last history teacher (Mr. Pearl) told us that censorship of words is never good but it is something that has popped up a bunch of times throughout history. He said that it’s done to try to control what people think, and feel, and assert dominance over them. Also a way to get people more used to the feeling of having their most basic human rights taken away. It’s something that tyrannical dictators do and it’s always with bad intentions.
It doesn’t matter how bad a specific word is supposed to be. Everyone has a right to say any word they want. It’s how you use them, that matters. And if you use certain words in a purposefully bad way, you should totally expect the backlash you get, but context is everything. If you’re just quoting a song, a news article, a movie, or are just explaining something, there’s nothing wrong with the use of any words in those situations.
I'm pretty sure the word "rape" isn't banned by any language filter here.
I haven't heard of anyone saying grape, I also don't really engage with "mass multiplayer social media" lol. It took me a couple of minutes and several comments to realize that grape replaces rape. As said by BCRanger10, I find this replacement hurtful because:
"You're just masking the problem or taking away from the gravity of them. In fact, in some ways, you almost turn them into a joke."
I understand why platforms are using language filters, I used them myself when administrating or moderating communities. But language filtering is a poor choice for managers, it's only a necessity because an open space on internet can generate uncontrollable traffic = generic social media, or generic MMO game. So, managers are using automatic (dumb) solutions instead of manual (intelligent) ones. Kind of the same problem with AI.
Though I understand how distressing such subjects are, especially to those who have experience with them, I still think it's kind of silly how hypersensitive we either are or feel like we have to be to them. We ought to be able to call things what they are. You're just masking the problem or taking away from the gravity of them. In fact, in some ways, you almost turn them into a joke.
The censorship that the council of Karens has created... that's what I think about.
Sewer slide, grape, certain Austrian from WW2, future doctor and/or astronaut, flaming bundle of sticks, and so on... we've had to replace all these original words with this shit because of the council of Karens. I mean seriously think about it... the words behind everything I just said could get me reported and given that week long ban here on this site still.
I think they should use the words we have always used.
It's idiotic to change words because people don't know what they mean so why confuse people?
The word they changed like grape, if they look it up in the dictionary they will get the definition of the fruit 🍇
It's idiotic, but that's a result of idiotic censorship rules, and I don't blame people for using such words to avoid losing their channel and often their livelihood. It's crazy how people can't have serious, academic discussions, but yet the gross abusers seem to get away with insane behavior for a very long time without consequences. But that's usually what happens with censorship, because there is usually a hidden agenda or someone in enforcement who is on a personal power trip.
I had to read comments to figure out what grape was supposed to mean.
I think stuff like that is stupid. It's unintelligible to those who aren't hip to the code. And people who do know the code know what it means, so why not use the real word?
Are words that scary?
This strikes me as politically correct, liberal censorship. Changing the English language to avoid offending anyone.
Grown ups speak clearly.
Dumb but regulations enforce it, I'm 100% against it. It's dictatorship plus pointless as you can just say any other word in place and we know what your on about. Though they'll try to ban any context of it next.
"And remember this: the Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear."
I think it's stupid just say it for what it is rape. If you get triggered by a word then you probably shouldn't be speaking on that topic to begin with.
Though I think when it comes to youtubers and streamers it's fine if they say grape since they can get banned or lose sponsors for saying that kind of stuff and that's money lost so I get that. But otherwise just say it for what it is.
It's a pressure some people think that the online "algorithms" will spot you as someone who's got something to hide. It's like suicide and yet murder isn't seen as triggering to anyone.
Yeah I don't know why murder wouldn't be either.
Rape is talked about almost every day on this site. Or at least the term is used. It will be a sorry day when the news says "A girl was graped last night and the juices flowed like grape wine out of her posterior.
@Simslover92 I dont' know what you are referring to? DM me if you like so that I understand your question.
Rape.
@Simslover92 Okay, the word probably triggers some. I am okay with reading it.
This is more so on youtube, not here. But it's unbelievably silly and stupid. Censorship of words as if that makes the world a better place because we can't spell out something bad even when we're just observing that it happens. It's like they think banning the use of the words means it doens't happen.
I think if it bothers people to talk about the subject then it is not being talked about enough. Changing the word doesn’t make it any less evil and changing your word to make it seem less evil is wrong. Call it what it is and the people that do what they are.
If it's a way to get around censors I don't care. But people using stand ins like that when they're able to use the real terms are odd to me. Like, feels like it takes away from the seriousness of it. Cause now I'm thinking about fruit lol.
They are forced to by many websites. They block posts with the word r*** but they can't ban "grape".
Oh ok. That makes sense.
What do I think? I think it’s another tactic to invalidate the seriousness of rape and death. It’s disguised as “protecting the victim” in order to create peer pressure to force conformity.
Just say the actual word. Calling it something else that sounds like it is just plain stupid. Walking on eggshells isn’t doing the victims any favors FFS. If the word is traumatizing for someone, then that’s their issue to work on. Not everyone else’s.
its dumb
if you dont wanna risk triggering someone then just dont talk about the topic lol like saying "grape" instead is still going to remind them of it
I think it's mostlyused by content creators because youtube for example is very sensitive to what kind of content you make. And then it caught on from there.
Does "unalive" mean "dead"? Does "grape" mean the grape flavor or the little purple fruit? The new ridiculous meanings and definitions being given to some words, are going to drive me to my grave. I frankly want no part of it. I will continue to use the words, and definitions we had for them back in the 1950's.
It's because YouTube and TikTok have been removing comments with the words "killed" and "rape"
Social media became heavily moderated after 2020 so I'm not surprised. I think it's necessary
it's just a way to get around the auto censors. i don't really think about it much
People do so to be more polite or, on some sites, to avoid getting flagged. I use neither of those terms, but I will type "Bullsh*t" for a similar reason.
I think your comment can be flagged and/or deleted if the real words are used. On Facebook, anyway.
It is odd that people anymore are so sensitive that we must bullshit up our language so they do not suffer a panic attack.
But grape is a fruit, what is the real word?
Rape
Oh, that... I believe they are trying to mitigate the meaning of the word.
It doesn't bother me. I'm sure they have their reasons.
It's DUMB!! It's corporate attempts at cya & pick me BS
Say what it is. Usa has gone to crap with all politically correct non sense.
it's stupid and annoying. And quite frankly dilutes the meaning of the words.
Usually because they're trying to make money.
When I see stuff like that, I feel like my eyes are being graped by stupidity XD
I have seen “Rape” used before
Oh ok. Wasn't sure.
I don't know what this is.
Rape
Because they're all a bunch of bar stewards.
Censorship is annoying. They're words people... just words.
Call a spade a spade.
It doesn't bother me
Yeah who wants to end up in GAG Jail?
Censorship is an evil we all must fight.
It’s what some platform allows.
Highly disagree on that
YouTubespeak
That they are weak minded.
