How dependable you are on a digital device. How frustrating it is to run out of battery when you most need it.
But as a kid, I learned to read a two digital map and find my way. Or to use a compass and coordinates. I learned how to find north looking at the night sky.
For all its ease of use, I still print my tickets before boarding a plane. I still have a rough idea of the direction I'm heading to, even if I use Maps or something similar in the car when driving in an unknown city or area.
I meant *a two dimensional map*. Two digits won't get you very far LOL
Understood... Lol!
It might sound counterintuitive but I find that the ease of access removes the value of things
Back in the day (before my time technically) being able to read a map, book a plane ticket, find out what’s the best restaurant in a new town, get gas, etc… required actual skill.
The people who could do that were seen as smart, worldly, and intriguing.
Now a kid with a phone can pull all that off with relative ease, so knowing how to do that is just basic skill.
So what makes someone a “worldly adventurous person” in the digital age? That’s the real question and even issue in some ways
Agreed 100 %. I was having a similar conversation with someone yesterday and it did get me thinking. We are using our brains and own intelligence less and less and being present in moments less and less. And it is a big shame to humanity.
Exactly.
And what’s worse is that even knowing that we can’t chose to stop.
Because you could toss your smartphone in the ocean and say you want a technology free life.
The second you get home you’ll realize how much things are ONLY accessible through digital means.
When I first landed in Paris I had to apply for a phone plan to get a number and internet so I wandered around for a couple of weeks without it.
So many things were inaccessible to me or I had no way of finding them.
I realize the irony of what I’m saying since I myself work in the tech industry and am guilty of pushing innovation forward still, but that’s just the lemons life gave me.
Yes, our phones are part of us and they are the keys to the door in this new era. And although I don't live in a city I still need it for everything. But what we can learn is control and balance. Finding small moments where we control the phone and not the opposite. I know it's not always possible and it's easier said than done but I do try to exercise some form of control.
Maybe in the space of your job although it is the tech industry in a way you can control it from the inside through what you do if that makes sense at all. So perhaps you're not so powerless because you know the ins and outs of it and awareness with the knowledge you possess is your sword.
How addictive they are for a quick dopamine hit. And how reliant we’ve become on them as a society. Older generations suffer with this because so much of the world has moved everything to our devices, rather than physical paperwork or face to face interactions.
The constant threat of having my phone hacked into.
Too many people having my personal information.
Gotta keep charging the darn thing!
Oh... you said one.
Having to be dependent on it and learn everything about it. Takes a while.
People are so glued to their devices that they have forgotten how to communicate.
That they tend to just quit working the very second you need them the most.
That I have to charge them.
They all track your location and what you do
You have to recharge the batteries.

They are sensitive to cyber-attacks.
They have no soul.
