+1 yTrains played a huge role in my life. One of my earliest memories, was me standing in my crib, watching a passing train in the middle of the night.
My dad worked for a train company, so we got reduced fares. We took many happy trips by train all over the country. Some of my best memories involved train travel, like slowly falling asleep in bed on a sleeper car to the gentle rocking and noises of the moving train.
Personally, I think train travel is a much more civil and satisfying way to travel. I can't stand air travel. Unfortunately, train trips take much longer and can be quite expensive!13 Reply- +1 y
True. I hate to see what a sleeper car berth costs. I think one years ago I checked and it was $900. But if you have a really long trip, that might be worth it.
- +1 y
Agreed! I would do it again!

u +1 yMy mother worked for Seaboard Coast Line, before Amtrak, and it had passenger service. She and her family members were allowed to deadhead wherever Seboard passenger service went. The only place we ever went to via train was Tallahassee, to visit her sister and family. It's only about 165 miles but thise was before the interstsate highway system was completed and Tallahassee was probably a four hour drive.

I don't know if Amtrak is really an improvement.
Yes, I've accompanied casketed remains on a train trip from Kansas City to Chicago (and returned without them). I've also taken the train from Washington, DC, to Philadelphia.
I took a roundtrip train journey from London to Salisbury during a trip to the UK, as well as local trains around London. Traveled by train in Spain as well.13 Reply- +1 y

Yes, almost every day. Now for a little rant...
In the UK and most of the rest of Europe we never had the problem you did in the US when the car/oil lobbies pretty much destroyed your public rail transit to line their own pockets. Short term gain, long term loss.
Biggest problem in the US is that the train operator doesn't usually own the track and freight gets priority. You also have zero true high speed lines. Those brightline things are just a token gesture.
I live in south east England and I have two mainline railway stations less than 15 minutes drive from my house, plus a highspeed one another 10 minutes away. I can get to London by train in anything from 20 to 60 minutes depending what station I go to. I have also taken highspeed rail through France and Belgium. Those TGV's are frikin' amazing. No passport needed, get on a couple of minutes before departure and a short while later you are doing 180 mph through the countryside.
I have had several friends and colleagues visit from the US and every single one of them has been amazed how good our trains are.21 Reply- +1 y

+1 yI have and your right Amtrak was running late both trips. Vacations where the train was essentially part of the trip to see how it was. I don't think I need to take it again though,, as twice was enough. As driving is way faster and they don't hold my car up for hours while police search it for criminals... yeah got into Reno heading west and they held us up for hours while they did a total train search looking for some criminals. Then we had no ride at the end when we got off, cause it was too late.
10 ReplyOnly once and it sucked. I was going from Detroit to Chicago and we had to pull to a side track to let a freight train through. We were stuck there for 2 hours and by the time we got into Chicago it was late at night and there were absolutely no taxis at the train station. Everyone just started walking from the train station to downtown. As more people walk away from the station more taxis came. But the taxis would see the people that were furthest away from the train station first, so they would get the ride, and everyone who stayed at the station I don't know how long they were there.
00 ReplyJust got home from a few.
I spent five days on the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer. Rode the White Pass train out of Skagway. Saw a couple of feet of snow along the tracks in June!
Then the Alaskan Hurricane train that makes unscheduled stops to to pickup and take supplies to the people living off grid in Alaska.
Very beautiful rides!10 Reply
+1 yLove trains, unfortunately there's a small group of politicaly connected powerful people who have blocked any construction, improvement etc of trains in the USA for decades, it's truly sad what a few powerful people are able to hold back progress so drastically. It's going to take the USA decades to catch up the the rest of the world.

+1 yI have been taking trains since 2005 and still. Not that often the last 4 years because i live on the country side.

These are the trains we have, they run late all the time but they do the job, sometimes :P00 ReplyI've travelled on trains my entire life in the UK, for work and pleasure. I have travelled extensively on Amtrak throughout the US too, and whilst it has its drawbacks it's a nice way to travel. It's very comfortable and you get to see a lot of the country, much better than greyhound as you stand much less chance of getting stabbed in your seat 😂

Back in the Philippines, my hometown is apparently served by the Manila Light Rail Transit System (L. R. T.). Perhaps, I'll try it at some point.00 Reply617 opinions shared on Travel topic. I've ridden on Amtrak between LA and San Diego several times. It was quick and comfortable, and normally on time... or close enough.
I've travel Europe by train many times, including overnights. The East Europeans trains can be a bit rugged.00 ReplyYes I have taken several trips. However, most of them were as a kid. As an adult train trips almost came down to zero.
Nowadays I don't have the patience that is needed for train travels.02 Reply- +1 y
Well, just go to Disneyland and take the train rides there.

Take a ride on the old 2-4-4-2 steam engine. That would be quite a rush. That was one huge steam locomotive.

Ooh nice!
- +1 y
Steam trains are the best. Take a look at this and then look at the build dates, 1948, 1949, 2008, ... hang on does that say 2008 ? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNER_Peppercorn_Class_A1

+1 yTook a trip on a train in India with some friends. Best sleep of my life.
08 Reply- +1 y
How? Those trains are usually pretty crowded and they don't have cans on them from what I hear.
- +1 y
What do you mean by cans? Do you mean cams? Like cameras?
A few would be awake while the others slept to watch us and our stuff. It usually is crowded, but during that train ride, we actually had two sections that were kinda empty on the train. The seats had flat, 2 inch thick mats on them, kind of like an exercise mat, and for some reason just laying on the mat, with the movement of the train just cradled me to sleep. It was awesome. - +1 y
I think she means bathrooms.
- +1 y
@Jamie05rhs Ahh.. Well ours had them. But they weren't your typical ones. Lol Just one hole the led straight to the tracks!
- +1 y
Oh my goodness...
- +1 y
In the 50's the trains didn't have holding tanks and just dropped the stuff on the tracks. My grandpa said they waited until the train was going over a crossing and then flushed it so it landed in the intersection.
