Would you follow a bird if you were lost?

This is a common trope in media and literature: someone who is lost sees a bird flying/landing slow enough nearby that they can follow it. So they do follow it, and it always leads them somewhere helpful.

Would you follow a bird if you were lost?

But this is just a trope; if you were lost in real life and saw a bird flying and landing nearby, moving slow enough you could follow it, would you follow it? Or would you stay put or leave and hope it flies away?

Yes! It must be a sign!
No! It must be a trap/useless!
