But in our country, shoes are only worn outside.
When you come home from outside, your shoes are taken off at the door.
The reason is that we do not want to bring germs from outside into our home. I wonder why Americans wear shoes at home?
It's a cultural thing. Growing up in California, nobody removed their shoes before they entered a house. Nobody washed their pets' feet when they came in, either.
I never did it when growing up and never got in the habit. I would only do it if my shoes were muddy or something.
We have mats outside and inside the doors to wipe our soles.
If I plan to stay indoors, I remove my shoes for comfort once I'm inside. But if I plan to go out again soon, I leave them on.
Germs? Give me a break. There isn't sewage on the sidewalks where I live.
For the simple reason that there is no good reason to take them off. You're worried about germs on the floor? Why does that matter? You're not going to eat off of it, and even floors that look clean are actually not.
And you ask yourself, "I wonder why Americans wear shoes at home", yet according to the map that you yourself have provided us with, about half the nations on the globe do the same. And we should all be thankful that in Iraq they don't take their shoes off either, because then we wouldn't have had the (very funny) incident when the Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at President Bush Jr. :D
Depends on the household.
As an American I don’t wear my “outside” shoes indoors. It’s been that way as a child, same for friends. We leave them at the door.
I did have a roommate that wore her shoes indoors though. It was worse because we had carpet. She saw me twitching and started taking them off at the door.
There is no reason to take shoes off when going inside. It doesn't hurt anything to leave them on, and it's a pain in the ass to take them off every time I go in and out. If they are totally covered in mud, I might take them off. Otherwise they stay on.
That's assuming I have shoes on in the first place, which I rarely do in the warm months.

I usually have to go outside afterwards or go to the basement. Besides, I like to have shoes on in case I have to move fast
The rule in our house is take them off where there's carpet or your legs will get broken.
@purplepoppy purple - did you grow up in a strict household? Overly strict? Lol. I like clean as much as anyone however sometimes I think - some people are fruity lol
I dont' wear shoes in my house, or in my car, or anyone eases' house.
YOU WILL NEVER ENTER MY HOUSE WITH SHOES ON! THAT WILL NEVER EVER HAPPEN!!
Sincerely,
An American not of Asian Descent
TY!!
I live in Canada & we take our shoes off when we enter the house.
I asked the same question before and apparently, some people got offended. It is dirty to wear outdoor shoes at home especially if your floor is carpeted.
When coming home from many jobs you bring dirt and germs in on your clothes. Why don't you take off your clothes when you come home?
I live in NZ and it's incredibly common to remove your shoes before walking into someones/your own house. Usually if they have carpeted floors, wood floors people don't bother with. Heck we don't even wear shoes in stores 😂
@Siri137 meh it's pretty normal especially in beach towns
My SO and I usually do take off our shoes when entering the house, putting on slippers or just walking around in socks. It keeps the floor cleaner.
We always take off our shoes. It saves dirtying up the carpet.
I've always taken my shoes off and put slippers on when I get home.
Our shoes always come off either in the front porch or rear utility room.
Anytime I’m in my home I’m barefoot but instead of kicking them off at the door I kick them off once I’m comfortable
Been Taught That as a Kid and it Still STICKS. xxoo
I live in America, in my house and almost any house I've visited, we take shoes off... Not sure where these statistics come from
My house we leave shoes at the door. Always have.
There is a mistake in the map, It says Iraqis don’t take their shoes off which completely false.
I’m not Iraqi but I know them very well.
because it is weird and want: easy to go outside, without on and off many times.
Because someone might steal it from outside?
Germs? As if you enter the house without your shoes than your house will be germs free 🤣🤣
It's just a tradition and maybe a little more cleaner for the house floor, that's all!
Take your shoes off and you have to sanitize less.
@dustybiker2 hope that their socks doesn't smell 😂😂
There is always a downside to every step of the process, eh? Excuse my punny.
