Putting aside the reason (s) for a moment, who's paying for multiple ceremonies when one for everyone is enough? Who (or more accurately, "what") really benefits from this? Wait... what's that going through the roof? Oh look! Everyone's tuitions!! Yay!!
Didn't need an Ivy League diploma to figure that one out...
The grad students are holding their own ceremony. They have every right to, seeing as it's a private ceremony and it falls under freedom of association under the first amendment. It doesn't bother me. Also, Harvard isn't the one doing it, it is organized by black students independently of Harvard.
@desertflwr He was against segregation of any kind.
"I have a dream that one day this nation will live out the true meaning of it's creed: We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal".
@misstalia_95 do you think Martin Luther King fought for the end of the segregation just so that "blacks celebrate thier own separate graduation"... caling me "ignorant"... wow.
Well this can be looked at two ways: One - it's a FU to the people who are labeling the minorites Or Two- they are making a statement Either or it's Harvard, when the keyboard warriors have the brain capacity to attend such an auspicious college (and I don't to hear shit about a lib college) then we can talk. Comments from the peanut gallery are a moot point

And yet, a high school in the south having an all white prom-held offsite and privately funded-is supposed to be as bad as an old time lynching.
Hell, let them have their private graduation. It's not like any of those affirmative action quotas actually "earned" a degree. They don't deserve to stand on the same platform as those who truly studied and worked hard.
It isn't progressive... no idea what the left wing would think about it... then again they generally attack what white people do that indicates racism so they probably will do a black power salute.
likely because Asians haven't pushed for it. Asians always wanna complain about being forgotten but really just don't wanna to the work to get noticed and get things like this.
@desertflwr Actually, Asians are judged on a harder scale in education; so, they wouldn't get noticed because there are too many Asians in the college / university system. Including Asians in the statistics would go against the whole "White privilege" accusation. Thus, Asians are forgotten or not included. Even crimes against Asians by other minority groups are not taken seriously.
@NerdInDenial you're either an idiot, willfully misunderstanding, or just actually confused. what I'm saying is that the black and latino students asked for this, pushed for this. Asian students obviously could've had this too but didn't fight for it. so you can't be upset that you didn't get something you didn't work for.
@desertflwr What I'm telling you is even if Asians pushed for it, the school wouldn't give it to them. I love how people automatically go into insult mode. This is why we can never have civilized conversations.
really, I'm just an old white county boy, I watch the news and had some college grew up around blacks and proud to say some are good friends. we talk about this shit sometimes and agree on about 90% of it. the other 10 % I can't give an opinion because I can't I know how you feel, so I can only respect what you say. that's good enough for me. I just don't understand why all the students went to class together, studied together, lived together, ate together, rode or walked to class together wouldn't want to have a graduation ceremony together. respectfully I Don't Get It
@rocknmanz3 I can't say either; I can only speculate. Not many Black Americans graduate from Harvard; thus, they may want a private ceremony to celebrate their accomplishments without being overshadowed by their white counterparts. I think it's another path in dividing us.
Sure, they may be separate... but they'll be equal, right? Nothing says equality like holding a special ceremony for someone else because they're different.
No, it's not, go look up the definition buddy: "Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior."

I'm fairly sure Martin Luther King is turning in his grave.
To add: I don't think there is such thing as positive racism, just racism.
Racism that's positive for one group is racism against every other group.
we don't know what MLK JR would say or feel about this because the white government killed him.
@desertflwr He was against segregation of any kind.
"I have a dream that one day this nation will live out the true meaning of it's creed: We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal".
we don't know how his views would have evolved
@desertflwr he wasn't that ambiguous about his beliefs...
Wow imagine an all white one... So racist.
But it can't be racist if it's about black people right?
That's really ignorant.
@misstalia_95 what do you mean?
@misstalia_95 do you think Martin Luther King fought for the end of the segregation just so that "blacks celebrate thier own separate graduation"... caling me "ignorant"... wow.

Yeah let's bring segregation back😂 let's not learn from the past we should repeat it

They won't have a private ceremony for Asians, the forgotten minority in America.
likely because Asians haven't pushed for it. Asians always wanna complain about being forgotten but really just don't wanna to the work to get noticed and get things like this.
dont worry nerd, Anyone who goes to these stupid things clearly are detached from reality

@desertflwr because it would be racism to suggest such a thing, and most Asians don't see themselves as deserving different treatment
Anything less than first class honours = beating in front of the whole graduating class with a shoe!
Those who do "pass", get to drive away in a new BMW from the ceremony.
I'd attend a ceremony like that 😂.

As long as they don't mind white people doing the same thing. This just proves most folk like being around their own race so why bullshit any more?
We are going to see segregation for as long as we acknowledge it!.
I'd like a pole over who paid for each of their educations and what were their rankings to get in amongst other races.
Sure, they may be separate... but they'll be equal, right? Nothing says equality like holding a special ceremony for someone else because they're different.
Disgusting!!! If it was the other way round it would be racist!
Very typical of racism these days! One way traffic
I wouldn't say it's racist, but yea that's just separating black people from white people and every other race. That's absolutely segregation.
Right, it's not an opinion. It IS segregation, and that's a fact.
@EnglishArtsteacher
By definition yes.
@EnglishArtsteacher no these students attend school-wide commencement with ALL other graduating students. This is an OPTIONAL, ADDITIONAL ceremony.
What if you do not identify with the race to which you were assigned at birth? #Transracial #WrongSkin
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Bethune Cookman graduation...
Oh it's coming when I can ask more questions in an hour lol
Ok lol. I was waiting for someone to mention it lmao
my thoughts are black people are pushing for segregation again.
Who cares what they do? It's not racist, nor is it harming anyone, so they can do whatever they want.
Excluding someone because of skin color is definition racism.
No, it's not, go look up the definition buddy: "Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior."
