The thing about TikTok is... I literally don't know why Facebook, or IG, or YouTube, or all these other social media apps seemingly aren't good enough to make LITERALLY the SAME content on? Why do people need yet ANOTHER? lol

If there's ANY threat at all of another nation using our data, or pushing a different version of the platform or app to us, than the one they do to their people, why wouldn't you just simply use a different app that was developed here in our own country? This was a concern YEARS ago and people dismissed it and laughed and brushed it off, and NOW the media is only starting to catch up.

I'm not even saying it's much better considering people are going to act like morons on it regardless, but weaponization of software or an app, (not to go there any further) but a freaking VIRUS... it all very much can be a thing. It isn't just guns and knives and bombs and hand-grenades we have to worry about, you know? Let's try and think outside the box a little bit for once as we go into this new decade, right? The very idea, the very concept of "FUN" can be weaponized.

People need to get serious, you know? Like, wake up.

The problem is enforcement. Will it be a crime to have it on your phone? Because even if its banned in the US people will just download it from other marketplaces that aren't in the US. Just use a VPN detail their country to some no place and download it. At least for Android users.

No. They’ve talked about banning it too many times and not following through for me to believe that it will happen. For goodness sakes, it’s just a social media platform. Who cares if China owns it. It’d be like them trying to ban Twitter or Instagram or Snapchat. Besides, there’s an American version of tiktok and a Chinese version of tiktok.

I didn't watch the entire video, but based on what little I saw, I strongly doubt Congress will do anything correctly in regards to TikTok. The problem is not the lack of effort, it's the ignorance on the subject. Our Congress is filled with two types of people: those form whom the Sony Discman is "advanced technology" (although that may have gotten upgraded to the iPod touch or even the Zune, if we're lucky) and those who are in their positions via some sort of quota. I have yet to see a single congressperson who is truly knowledgeable about any of the subjects they have been tasked with regulating.

All these politicians know is that, at the behest of their constituents, they are supposed to ask about...something; they don't know what or why. They know that TikTok is owned by ByteDance, which is a Chinese company (even if the CEO is Singaporean), and that means it answers to the CCP. That alone make TikTok a danger to national security, in a way that Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google, Microsoft, Apple and Tesla somehow aren't.

At least the NSA doesn't keep a social credit score on the American people, right?

Of course not- Congress doesn't have the authority to do that. They CAN force Google and Apple to stop distributing it through their stores (why so many people are content to let two centralized distributors handle ALL of their file hosting baffles me; we learned that this was a bad in nineteen ninety freaking-TWO, just a few months after I was born)- other APK (or whatever the Mac equivalent is) hosting sites will do just fine.

And can I be the first to say how much I love that Biden's compromise plan was "hand all the data over to Oracle"? Because it's apparently perfectly okay if it's an American company spying on people.
