Personally I enjoy this slice of US culture, not being American. As well as the 4th of July.
410 opinions shared on Trending & News topic. Boycotting Thanksgiving of all things seems weird. People who do must just be perpetually miserable. They enjoy playing victim and virtue signaling self-righteous opposition to everything.
I can understand boycotting Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In fact, that makes total sense to me. Fuck consumerism.
But I see Thanksgiving as America's harvest festival. We eat foods that are indigenous to America like turkey, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, cranberries, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, etc.
It's a time to be grateful for the Earth's bounty and to celebrate our good fortune with family and friends.
I was surprised by your question about boycotting Thanksgiving and wondered if it was true, so I looked it up and found that some people are indeed planning to boycott Thanksgiving this year for various reasons.
"A significant number of people, particularly after contentious elections, consider skipping Thanksgiving to avoid political arguments with family members.
"For many in the Indigenous community, Thanksgiving is a painful reminder of colonization, the theft of land, and the oppression of their people, leading some to refuse to celebrate it.
"Some groups organize boycotts of Thanksgiving and the subsequent shopping days (Black Friday and Cyber Monday) to protest economic inequality and corporate influence. They encourage people to withhold spending, streaming, or working during these periods to demonstrate economic power.
"Some EBT recipients have planned boycotts for both Thanksgiving and Christmas if they do not receive their full food stamp benefits."
I don't see how their boycotting Thanksgiving will accomplish anything. Nobody cares if you choose to be miserable.31 Reply- 8 mo
I agree. I see Thanksgiving as like a national harvest day festival brought over by Europeans. Just maybe a later date because of climate differences. In the UK Harvest festivals occur on different dates depending on the area and usually just on a Sunday. Usually only in small towns and villages and its a community thing but its not a national holiday. If you think about it there's only so many national holidays that can be had.

We celebrate Thanksgiving to give thanks. To show gratitude and appreciation for friends and family. For the feast of a good harvest. To celebrate the positive traits we share with all people and not focus on negative differences. And Happy Thanksgiving. 🦃

10 ReplyI am sure you have plenty of people like this in Britain some people love being angry at the system, what they are really angry at is the fact that they are bored.
12 Reply- 8 mo
Britain doesn't have Thanksgiving. I have heard of ones boycotting Christmas because its not multicultural but I've seen Hindus, muslims and others enjoy Christmas even if they dont go in for the religious aspect.
- 8 mo
I didn't mean about Thanksgiving specifically, what I mean is that there are likely people in Britain as there are throughout the world, who like to boycott things that are popular, because it makes them feel superior, that they are above the "consumerist plebs". I can understand some Muslims and Hindus not being interested in Christmas even if others might celebrate the non-religious aspects of it. The people I am thinking of are the sort whose families celebrate Christmas, but they make a point of not doing so and they want everyone to know it.

8 moConsidering how the US government has treated the indigenous population throughout history, that day doesn't mean much to me.

Didn't they get those reservations?
- 8 mo
Is there something WRONG with you? Rhetorical question, I know there is. LOL Look up the "Trail of Tears". Have you ever been to or seen the land on a reservation, especially in the western or northern USA? They're basically deserts.
If you want to speak to US history, learn the truth about it. You sound like a fool with this comment. - 8 mo
You know almost every people have had their trail of tears moment. Hard to think of those who have not.
- 8 mo
@Jackblue Jack, are you serious? You think white people IMPROVED the lot of indigenous folks? You're a sick man. As to the reservations, I apologize in advance for ad hominem attacks, but you have to be a god damn IDIOT to say what you just said. Do some research.
Do you actually THINK ( hmm, that's a stretch) that the US Government would put tribes on land where they KNEW there were valuable natural resources? Are you stupid, or what? The tribes are on deserts. IF anything were to be found on those lands worth extracting, the US Government would find a way to remove the tribes and take back the land. You have to be an imbecile to say what you said. What the actual fuck? - 8 mo
So what? Really, so WHAT? What kind of PERSON justifies one of the WORST moments in a nation's history by saying " eh, well you know, it's happened to everybody". What a shitty effin thing to say.
Back to the question. You asked WHY some Americans are boycotting it? There's your answer... there's no JOY in the remembrance of how the white settlers treated the indigenous people who saved their fucking asses from starvation. Stick to your own sordid history. There's plenty of British cruelty to go around the globe. - 8 mo
www.wilsoncenter.org/.../native-american-energy-sovereignty-key-american-energy-security This shows what percentage of natural gas is on indigenous land. You say we didn't improve the lives of indigenous people, do you honestly think that houses and even trailers aren't infinetly better than living in adobe huts or wigwams. Famine is no longer stalking indigenous tribes as it once normally did. Modern healthcare is in fact superior to indigeous medicine. Yes the natives helped the pilgrims, and then they later started a conflict to try to exterminate them in King Philip's war. Dr. Marcus Whitman saved many native lives but they still killed him. Decades before Columbus Inuit massacred the whites of Greenland who were there before them. Heck the natives were only in the New World first because they drove the ancestors of the Indo-Aryans the Ancient North Eurasians out of Siberia. I am not justifying the Trial of Tears, I am merely pointing out that such incidents are common and that there is no reason to be angry about that nearly two centuries later.
- 8 mo
@Jackblue Horseshit Jack. Did the indigenous people ASK for the white man's help? Their disease? Their greed? Their pollution? Are you TRYING to make a case that the Indians were the aggressors our to exterminate the white folk? Give it a rest. How many natives did Sullivan kill under Washington's orders, including the tribes who helped them? Peddle it elsewhere.
Some tribes are doing great due to casino revenue, which by the way, was fought against by the US in its initial stages. But the poverty rate on reservations today is 28%, well above the national average. Their healthcare system SUCKS, as the Bureau of Indian Affairs gets less and less money under every Republican regime, and FQHCs become fewer and farther between. Modern "everything" when it comes to science is generally superior to medical techniques from 300 years ago, or 1,000 years ago. Aren't you wise, professor? But what good does it do you if you have no access to it, or have to travel hundreds of miles to get it because your asshole Congress won't allocate enough funds to service rural areas?
Do you really want to hash out who got driven out of Siberia, or where they landed. Do you think anthropologists are so certain that no one was in the "New World" until then? They're not. But regardless, how does that justify the white man slaughtering whatever color people stood in the way of their progress?
- 8 mo
@Jackblue Looking back at history and saying "Oh, man's inhumanity to man is common", so it's just something we should accept going forward because sooner or later, it happens to everyone? You see, that sort of thinking is WHY it continues to happen, JACK. There is PLENTY of reason to be angry about it two centuries later, because the action repeats itself in a different form with the same intended results. You "think" you're not justifying it, but your conciliatory remarks are "at least you're not living in wigwams... and in poverty".
Just to make matters worse, the perpetrators mummify their actions, write it out of the history that's taught because it doesn't fit their indoctrination program, ad nauseum. Go ahead and tell me the victorious get to write the history, JACK.
Lastly, how much time have you EVER spent on a reservation? Do you have ANY idea what it's like? Do you have ANY idea what it WAS like to be shipped off to schools and physically beaten if you spoke your native language? Oh, but it was fine during WWII when it was needed to use a code the Nazi's couldn't break, huh? You have no idea what life on a reservation is all about. My wife grew up on one, as did her mother, and grandmother, both of whom had the crap beat out of them for who they were. So don't F****** tell me what there's no reason to be angry about, even 200 years later. - 8 mo
You say that science is superior to how it was 300 years ago, and that is true, but you seem to be of the impression that that happens automatically. However the uncontacted natives of the Amazon didn't exactly learn how to improve things now did they? Natives only learned from white people teaching them, Believe me when I say that natives of the US are getting access to medical care and housing, that is how they are living so long and not dying. I never said I believe that whites should slaughter people of color. In fact it is natives who call it acts of resistance when they slaughter white people. What I am stating is that they need to accept that this land belongs just as much to us as to them.
- 8 mo
I have seen reservations, they aren't perfect, but I have seen much worse too. You left wingers seem to be under the impression that housing, food, medicine and everything else come naturally and that white people especially rich ones are just taking it all. The reality is for most of history we have been lucky to reach the age of five humanity has had to make small steps toward controlling poverty and death. Whether you like to believe it or not the white settlement in the americas was a step in said direction. As for what your wife and her mother felt like, I will consider it just as I consider what it felt like when white captives were tortured by natives.
- 8 mo
@Jackblue " As for what your wife and her mother felt like, I will consider it just as I consider what it felt like when white captives were tortured by natives."
" Believe me when I say that natives of the US are getting access to medical care and housing, that is how they are living so long and not dying."
You're quite the little shit. I happen to know EXACTLY what they are and are not getting, since that's my wife's field of work. You're just blowing smoke dude. Indigenous people's life expectancy average is anywhere from 8 to 12 years LESS that not only whites, but blacks AND Hispanics. A cursory search can give you this information.
Whites were the invaders, the occupiers. There are always bands of "purists" who don't want any invaders in their lands. The tribes themselves were very territorial for the most part, but then Confederacies were formed to help end needless bloodshed. So let's throw out the extremists on both sides and tell me --- who did the slaughtering and movement of indigenous people? Did they kill themselves? Did they CHOOSE to move from their lands? No, it was the US Government... white folk.
- 8 mo
@Jackblue Here's my favorite: From 1770 to 1871, the US Government entered into more than 500 treaties with various indigenous tribes. They broke or nullified... hmm, wait for for it, EVERY ONE OF THEM. As soon as any kind of profitable resource was found on Indian land, or the land became part of an expansion plan, or whatever reason, possession was revoked.
You sound ridiculous when you try and compare white people's pain over the few white settlers who were killed by tribal purists versus a systematic, planned genocide that was perpetuated over decades to "eliminate those savages".
What you gleefully overlook, as I said before, as a "that's the way things go" event in history, is the real point. White folk didn't NEED to do what they did to Natives. They had enough history of their own to draw from to know what it was like. But they CHOSE to do what they did, usually in the name of their God and sovereign nation. And they STILL do it today, only in a slightly more civilized way, until the Scum regime took over.
I repeat with emphasis... it's people who think like you do that it keeps happening, again and again. It's the same shit under a different hat with a new "sounding" justification. - 8 mo
So let me get this straight the US government made treaties with natives in 1770 before the US was even a country. Tell me about each of these treaties and how you think the US broke them, because in many cases it was natives who attacked first. Let me put it to you this way regarding the other stuff, you natives didn't spare white culture when you had the opportunity to overrun it. You laid waste to it in Siberia and Greenland and in the frontier areas of the US and Latin America. If white people had been spared in Siberia and come to the New World first god only knows how many of our lives would have been spared. That is genocide, nearly 16,000 years of it. Nowadays native americans call abortion genocide and ban it on reservations but still vote democrat. Apparently killing white babies is fine just not native American ones. Have you also noticed that when you try to talk about what natives lack you can only do so by comparing it to white people. Thus white people's success is inherently threatening to natives according to you.
- 8 mo
@Jackblue That was a typo - 1780. Let me put it this way... I'm not an indigenous native descendant, my wife is. And I doubt there was anything "white" in freaking Siberia during the time you seem fixated on, to prove whatever point you think is valid.
Here's a great example of your bullshit hyperbole: "Nowadays native American's call abortion genocide and ban it on reservations". Bullshit.
There are 574 Indian tribes recognized by the BIA in the US, and you CLAIM they speak UNITLATERALLY on abortion? LOL Tribes make their own rules on abortion, but whatever they decide, access has always been limited. Some tribes have fought to have greater access, other's don't care about that and just want more access to health care, period. So your statement is not based in fact, whatsoever, other than they vote democrat. Please stop making shit up.
When it comes to comparing what the "haves and have nots have", color or race doesn't matter. White folk who lack also compare themselves to white folk who "have", or anybody who "has", whatever color or race they are. I personally have at least anecdotal evidence of this having spent 5 years as a volunteer in a soup kitchen in a very poor neighborhood.
Some people feel a communal threat when another's success directly effects a group, large or small, of other people. Some people don't feel threatened by anyone's success unless it comes at their own personal expense. Everything the USA has done, EVER, when it comes to Native Americans, has been at their expense. That's what I'm talking about, not Siberia or Mongolia thousands of years ago. I'm talking a nation less than 250 years old, doing what they did. Period.
You have nothing more to offer me. Have a good day. - 8 mo
Not of indigenous descent yourself, ok then, well be sure you never spend too long on a reservation with your wife then or if you do don't piss her off. There you can be tried by native courts where you are disenfranchised 15th amendment be damned. Farewell I will enjoy my Thanksgiving dinner, and you ain't getting none.
