SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A Guatemalan driver fleeing a Georgia traffic stop by federal immigration officers crashed into another vehicle, killing a teacher who was headed to work, authorities and school officials said.

Oscar Vasquez Lopez, the driver accused of causing the Monday crash just outside of Savannah, remained jailed Tuesday on charges including vehicular homicide, reckless driving and driving without a valid license. Lopez, 38, is in the U. S. illegally, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Immigration officers were looking for Lopez to enforce an immigration judge’s 2024 deportation order, ICE spokesperson Lindsay Williams said Tuesday, noting that Lopez has no other criminal history.

Lopez pulled over when ICE officers used sirens and blue lights to initiate a traffic stop, but then drove away when they approached his vehicle, Williams said. Lopez made a U-turn and ran a stop light before he crashed, ICE said in a news release.

Why do we have to grieve a teacher dying on her way to work, her death caused by yet another illegal alien?

Looking at some opinions, it's apparent that I should have worded the question differently.
It's not my intent to force people to grieve for the dead teacher.
Rather, to wonder why another senseless death happened.
I'll try to pick better words in the future.

And just because you have the title name to do whatever you want, you think it's okay to do whatever you want. And this is the kind of crap that happens instead of thinking before doing.

It's a 3 ton car. It's a weapon, and what would make those people think that it is okay to race through busy streets with\n Population of people walking the streets going from one place to the other red lights, green lights. Bumper to bumper or what have you, what would make you think you're not going to hurt somebody or get hurt, there are other ways to go about things, and people are just ignorant and stupid, because they have a title, I can't get myself to even watch what they would say or what even happened, my stomach's turning right now. I can feel it already.

@Friendlybro79 I grieve when an innocent person dies needlessly. The illegal, Oscar Vasquez Lopez, should have been deported in 2024, when the deportation order was issued. But no one in the Biden Administration, in power then, made any effort to enforce it. Everyone involved in that decision are complicit in the poor teacher's death, yet will never be held accountable, and that is really sad.

Regarding your update I re read the original question and now I feel bad that I read it wrong. Sorry about that. What's sad is that I actually try not to do stuff like this. I was thrown off by it but I should have known better to ask for clarification first.

And to be fair yeah we should all choose our words wisely but we all could be better at reading things and assume the best not the worst. I actually try to and I suck sometimes at it lol

It is senseless and I think ICE and the State of MN need to come to better terms and approach to doing their jobs. Something needs to change. Without getting deep into it I think ICE's tactics need to change and better training is needed. That could really deescalate stuff.

If he had no other crimes, why were they going after him? This is why I'm against police chases in 90% of cases. Unless the person has a hostage, or is going to launch a bomb or something. Let them go. It's not worth the risk of life.

It's sad for everyone. Oscar didn't want to kill anyone. He just didn't want to go to some concentration camp. It's also sad for the teacher. I think whether you are pro Ice or anti ice everyone can agree this is a sad story.

I don't know why this is such a hard concept. If there is an illegal alien and he obeys the traffic laws, doesn't rob banks, doesn't fly planes into buildings, etc. the fact remains that he is still here ILLEGALLY (against the law). It's a shame that the innocent bystanders must suffer.

Because it was the fault of ICE he was fleeing. We don't even know if they were justified to chase him.

You cannot believe ICE in any assertion they make. They will lie to detain, and lie before court as well, if they feel like it.

There have been over 4,400 rulings of unlawful detention by ICE to date. Doesn't make for waiting around to be the next. A teacher had to die due to ICE incompetence.

@jshm2 ICE had a valid legal reason to locate him and take him into custody. A judge in 2024 issued a deportation order for him. That should have been carried out in 2024, but that isn't what the Democrats and the Biden Administration did. ICE in 2026 were just doing their job, a job that should have been done 2 years earlier.

You should at least have some compassion for them, even if they are not right. And not that ICE is supposed to have a goal and you have to obey, and that is to let them control you, don't fight their authority, just obey it. It's still wrong for them to do what they did, who knows if they will be punished for it, only time will tell.
