Not everyone has...or better yet, wants to, blow a ton of money on one day, but if your partner is really into the day or you want to do something special despite low funds, here are 15 great cheap date ideas for Valentine's day.
1. Build a Love Fort
Gather up your pillows, blankets, lights and either surprise your date with your fort or make your little love nest together. Once built, you can watch movies, listen to music, talk, or do other fun things in your creation.
2. Picnic in the park (with a twist)
Don't just do boring sandwiches, put a theme on your picnic basket where you each surprise each other with only food items on theme like all red foods, or popular snacks from 1970. Get creative.
3. Have your friends plan your date
Let them know everything must be under a certain budget and then have them fill out envelopes with things they think you should do together, and have fun opening them and seeing what romantic things your friends have come up with. This also totally takes the stress off you to plan something.
4. Go out for breakfast date instead
Depending on where you go, this is way cheaper and doesn't usually require a reservation like a dinner date.
5. Couples Cooking Challenge
Challenge your couple friends to a cook off to see who can make the most romantic dish (or whatever).
6. Go for a night bike ride
Bring some snacks, your mixtapes, whatever, and just go for a ride in your city and discover something new about it together.
7. Camp out under the stars in your backyard or balcony
Put down the couch cushions and every pillow you've got. Play a few intense rounds of card games or board games, microwave up some s'mores, share a beer and some laughs.
8. Re-create romantic movie scenes
Are they really romantic or just a bunch of fiction. Try some out with your partner and find out.
9. Go do that
Is there something local, cheap, or free. Go do that. Even if it sucks, it will definitely give you guys something to talk about.
10. Volunteer together
Make your date not just about you, but bringing love and kindness to those in need. Volunteer to write Valentine's cards to kids in the hospital or help feed the homeless.
11. Binge watch
Pick a show that neither of you have seen and make a go at finishing the entire first season.
12. Enlist your friends
Try just asking friends or family to help you with your date. If you know a friend who can cook, have them be your chef for the night, or a friend who plays guitar or can sing, have them serenade your partner, or if your friend knows someone who knows someone, have them hook you up with tickets to whatever in exchange for something they need like baby sitting or their lawn mowed. People are more likely to help you out if you offer your services back in return.
13. GPS scavenger hunt
Print out a map of your general local area, and close your eyes and pick somewhere on the map and go wherever there is. Create a scavenger hunt you must complete...like take a photo with a town statue or 5 things with the town name on it, go to the local grocery store, find out the history of the town from a local, find out if their restaurants are even on Yelp.
14. $20 Challenge
The two of you must each plan a date to take place either in the morning or the afternoon, but the whole entire date and all costs for both of you, must be under $20. Let your partner know you want to see how creative they can get because you plan to have the better date planned...of course.
15. Make a cheap date film
Grab your phones and create a vlog about creating a magical cheap date experience. You can make it funny or real, but add Real World style confessional booths, dress up in cheesy outfits, or really find out some good local cheap spots according to the internet, and give them a try and report live on how they measure up.
