First of all, I don't think there is any one set of characteristics for the bad boy who falls for the good girl. Sometimes, though, it is the desire to have something that seems elusive, or out of their reach. In that case, sometimes it is more about attainment and conquest, than relationship. Other times it is about God working to initiate a relationship that He will utilize to bring change into the lives of everyone involved.
The second part is easier. God is the only effective agent of change in a person's heart. He knows what memories are linked to what wounds, which trigger what reactions to which pain that has never been processed and healed.
If you consider a physical wound, there are various points at which a person can, and must go through a process before healing can occur. The same is true for wounds to our souls. The difference is simply the difference between the external bocy and the internal soul and mind. Wounds must be recognized, acknowledged, cleansed, treated, sutured, massaged, and exercised, whether the wound is physical, emotional or mental.
Whenever I hurt someone, I know there is something in me that caused me to hurt them. I go to God, confess what I have done and let Him dig up the issue, the wound behind it, and the infection in the wound. I face it, acknowledge that it hurts and begin grieving the losses involved. As I grieve, my tears irrigate the wound, allowing Christ to debried it. Once He has debrieded it, He sutures it shut, puts salve on it and bandages it. Then He allows the enemy of my soul, through people and otherwise, to massage the wound, probing around it, to begin the process of exercising and preparing that area of my heart for use again.
God is the only One who knows what memories need to be processed, so the appropriate wounds can be grieved and healed, so the issue gets resolved and I no longer react to the pain of the original wound, someone just reminded me about but, respond in love, knowing I have suffered and been healed by the love of God.

I wish I had an answer for you, because I'd like to know myself. I've hopelessly fallen for a bad boy, A musician who sleeps with a bunch of drunken floozies. Yet I see something in him. I'd say anything can happen. People can change and love can do weird things. I think you are meant to be with, who you're meant to be with and it will happen regardless. Good or bad, if it's meant to be it will be.
Sounds like "A Walk to Remember".
