Why is my crush so confusing?

So there's this guy I really like. He is so confusing though! We used to talk all the time and I thought he liked me, or at least saw me as a friend. Then he got a girlfriend. Even though he had a girlfriend though, we still smiled in the hallway and talked to eachother. We were also in a church group together and his mom was our teacher. His mom and I developed a close relationship and I really started to admire her. That was last year. This year, he never looks at me and when we pass each other in the hallway, he doesn't look at me. He also broke up with his girlfriend recently. Then all of the sudden he started smiling and saying hi to me again. A few days after this, I interviewed his mom for a paper I was writing. After the interview, he stopped looking at me and I feel like he is trying to avoid me. Do you think he is weirded out that I have a close relationship with his mother? Why is he so hot and cold all the time?
