How to approach a cute guy at work?

There's a guy at my job that I find cute, but we don't work in the same department so I don't really get to see him or approach him. The only times I see him is when my department needs something from his department and he just so happens to be at the front desk, although he's preoccupied. One of his close friends, maybe even best friend, works in my department and we're on friendly terms. Do you think I should ask the best friend to help me out, or should I find another way to approach him?

Just walk up to him and say hi. Compliment something he wears or looks or something. Guys are easily more approachable than women.
