Healthier Flavor Alternatives

I have a bachelors in Culinary and Food Service Management so naturally I learned a bit about nutrition in school. A problem most culinary students have is that they usually rely on bacon, cheese, and butter to get good flavor, but there are many things that people can do to get a great tasting meal without getting diabetes. Here is a list of a few ingredients or things that can be used to get a bomb flavor profile:

  • Herbs

  • Spices

  • Garlic

  • Onion

  • Shallots

  • chilies

Cooking with Herbs

Herbs are pretty awesome, basil is pretty great on pasta - it can be used to make a pesto or simply cut thinly in order to complement the flavor profile. Rosemary goes pretty great on lamb, and dill can be used to create a tzatziki sauce which also has cucumber, yogurt, and a bit of lemon juice.

Cooking with Spices

Ethnic cuisine often relies on spices in order to get its flavors, in India they rely on many spice mixes for their fool like garam masala. Spices can also be used to create rubs and barbecue sauces.

Cooking with Garlic, Onions & Shallots

Garlic, onions, and Shallots are all aromatics they pack a lot of flavor. They are the basic essentials in a lot of restaurant recipes. Garlic is obviously used a lot in Italian food and it helps provide a lot of its flavor. Roast garlic and puree it up with any soup , I like roasted tomato soup with bell peppers and garlic.

If you have to make a sauce I suggest adding shallots to it and then straining it, these babies pack a lot of flavor as they are a cross of an onion and garlic.
