It is kind of a tricky thing. He probably has had a million people tell him how sorry they are for his lose and if there anything I can do for you... He maybe tired of hearing that. Maybe just tell him your happy to see him and that he was greatly missed at work. Tell him your there for him but only when he is ready. Then just leave it at that.
I don't think its ever a negative thing to show thoughtfulness and sensitivity.
Whatever he is feeling... whether pangs of grief or basic numbness, he will appreciate your heartfelt thoughts as a co-worker.
