I wanted to start off by saying how unique and talented we all are. We all work very hard to fulfill our individual dreams come true. However, sometimes I feel as if we all are too caught up into the modern world. I know I always am. We live in one of the richest cities in the world, so I am pretty sure some of us do not realize that more than 1% of the people in the world actually live under the poverty line. Did you know that 1 in 8 people in the world will go to bed hungry tonight? Or that a child under the age of 5 dies every 6 seconds due to hunger-related problems? Even locally, one in five children who go to school live under the poverty line in Vancouver.
I went to a homeless shelter 2 weeks ago and encountered a 5 year old girl who left her home because her parents beat her, abused her, and her uncle sexually abused her. She was incredibly sensitive and afraid of me, and it broke my heart to see such a young girl with potential to become someone outstanding, shut herself out from the world so early in her life.
Although it is not something you might understand since we are surrounded by wealthy people, its important to take this into consideration and not be ignorant about it . To take away from this, I hope that each one of you appreciate the love you obtain from your loved ones, rather than your new Iphone. Because in the endthat’s what wil make you happy.
