Depression, any advice on this?
- also are you for or against medication?
I think everyone is different. What works for one won't work for another, which is why there are so many treatment options.
Personally I didn't find them helpful. I felt like a zombie and though I slept really well I was always exhausted and lethargic. I had pretty severe depression when I was 18 and found therapy my best treatment. I found someone I could talk to who would talk me around to the root of the problem or show me another point of view. The coping mechanisms I learned taught me how to deal with my issues and I still use them daily.
I still see my therapist a few times a year so smaller problems don't become big ones.
A few of my friends and colleagues have/are using antidepressants with good results though, some longer term. A very close friend is currently changing medications after trying a few that didn't work for her so really; I think they are worth trying but if you don't feel better after the stabilisation period you need to keep trying other treatments
Thanks for MHO honey, I hope you find something that works for you!
Without a doubt I'm for antidepressants- they've worked wonders for me. Don't be afraid to try them. Yes, drugs can have side effects, but a) not everybody suffers from every one and b) there are tons of meds out there, so if you do suffer from side effects from the first one odds are you can find one that won't give you trouble.
As for natural methods, the answer is exercise.
Never take medication with (dangerous) side effects.
How I'd lift the depression if I were you
- Get a lot of sleep. The hours before 12 count twice. Try to fall asleep at 10pm or 10:30. If you didn't sleep well, you are much more likely to be depressed.
- Eat very healthy. Lots of fresh fruit and vegetables every day. Lots of water aswell.
- Help other people. Helping other people has been proving to elevate your happiness and thus lessen your depression.
- Do something you like
- Work out. Very. Hard. Work out like you've never worked out before. Tire yourself to a point you've never reached. It's physically impossible to feel depressed after a running till your lungs burn.
- Take a cold shower. Can you do this? Can you stand still in a ice cold stream of water for 30 seconds straight? 1 minute? 2 minutes? Maybe even 5?
I've been taking them since I was 16. I took Citalopram for about 5 months but it did nothing, and then I got moved onto fluoxetine, I think you guys call that Prozac in the US?
It helps, but, don't get me wrong I still feel suicidal more often then not, my doctor said to me, they don't help solve your issues, they only help you cope with them better, which is very true.
The things that depress you now will still depress you when you're on them. Only now you feel like you can take it a little bit longer.

Well, in my case when i took Antidepressants they made me
more depress and I found that out when i took my first medication
called Tofranil it made me more depress. When i took Prozac i could
not stop laughing after many years my true diagnosis was Bipolar,
Schizo-effective disorder, Anxiety, Dissociation disorder. My opinion
the medication Symbyax helps Bipolar and Depression so you may
want consider also you may want try Antidepressant but if you seem
to be more sad and or depress or over anxious with too much energy
there is chances you may have Bipolar and Depression. If you want a
site that does help people you can try talking to someone from
www.Nami.org there is people who will help you and they do have
toll free numbers to call them and they can tell you more about stuff
with medications.
I believe society has become too dependent on drugs to "cure" things but I'm no doctor either. In your case, maybe he's right but I personally don't believe in it. Simple things in my experience can lift my mood greatly sometimes. Examples, music, exercise, just getting out of the house sometimes, spending time with friends/family etc. Even the weather sometimes.
Exercise, for sure, is good.
I don't have a yes or no answer for you. Some people do need antidepressants, for others you're using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Just so you know, a lot of those meds have drastic adverse effects, and you can become dependent. You may also find yourself needing higher and higher doses to achieve the same effect.
Or you might just get better and come off them, if you're lucky.
I believe with the right dosage, anti-depressants are essential!
I'm against medicine for depression. I've been in a depression and never ever took I something from the doctor. I believe that it's all in the head
I take antidepressants, they work, but they make my low points even lower sometimes. And other days the just don't work
ım against the antidepressants - because after some point they dont work -ıt is better to find the cause n cure it
@TheOldMan59 yeah thats right
Diet is a huge part of mood. If you feel you have no reason to be depressed, try vitamin D supplements or increasing other vitamin and mineral intake
Everybody is different, but I know I wouldn't be here now if I wasn't on antidepressants.
take SSRI do not take benzos benzos are dangerous , gabapentin and l-theanine is more safe
Against antidepressants
