Well, I don't like either, lol. But I think a lot of people whether they are right or not assume that cowboys are kinda the good 'ole boy racist type. tbh So I don't think many people of color go for it, at least I don't. I lived in NH where there were a lot of "cowboys" with the confederate flag and stuff. But they weren't looking for any colorful girls anyways so it worked for them haha. I think a girl should like you for who you are, rather than how you wear your hat. But, at least for me, the cowboy thing is cheesy, but everyone is different. So good luck, and don't worry about it if you love to look that way find a girl that loves the way you look! :)
A lot of girls are drawn to the "gangsta" type. But I see most of them as players. The country guys are suppose to be sweet and stuff. I mean you hear the country music. I love Jason Aldean. I know a lot of girls who think he's sexy haha. Same for Luke Bryan and Kenny Chesney and they're all country singers. My boyfriend is a mix between the two types of guys you described and I love him and wouldn't trade him. But I know a lot of girls that like guys like you. I mean no girl wants to be with a guy that's afraid to get his shoes dirty!

A lot of girls like that type, but for others it can be a real turn-off. Some girls look at cowboys and think of a tough, outdoorsey, fit, adventurous, sexy wild kind of guy with a soft spot for romance. Other girls see an ignorant small town bumpkin that doesn't know the world outside his own front door. These types sometimes also see a southern conservative, which can really be a turn off with girls from the city.
Alot of girls like your type, your quicker to settle down and have a successful marriage, unlike the "bad boys " but don't worry about those who choose to be that way, like who you are and inpower yourself! Sooner or later your gonna find your perfect cowgirl ...who may not be a cowgirl at all!
Cowboys are sexy! The southern flare is really the cutest and most attractive thing for me. Southern boys really do seem to be better raised with good values and a good head on their shoulders.
It's also best of both worlds because horses are the bomb!

There is so much yes in this answer. I don't care so much about the fixing and the building of stuff but any guy who can give me a run for my money horseback riding is pretty much awesome.
