I, like many around me, am an aspiring artist, and throughout my ongoing journey, I've had a lot of people who say they support me, actually throw me with the wolves. With many artists in general, meaning singers, musicians, song writers and artists, people are very reluctant to support other people. Is it simply because we don't feel they are important enough? or is it something simple, like motivation or laziness? I'm not sure, and even still, the thought baffles me. You have people who struggle to gain supporters in their art forms, (I don't think that means they are necessarily not succeeding in their chosen art-form). Even people in the same field who have made it into the spotlight seem to dust the aspiring ones off their shoulders; ironically, the very people who support them, become unimportant. That is...until someone more known than them is stumbled upon....and thus continues the endless cycle of "importance"

I am an aspiring artist, and I have made it my goal to begin a journey that will take me beyond what other people thought was possible from me. I am not saying that I want to feel like my art is important because to me, it is important as is everyone else's art; but I think for all people who are at the bottom, trying to get the things that they are most passionate about, seen, should help each other out. Be kind, always. Artistic people are gracious, sensitive people. Putting your art out there for everyone to see, is a very scary and brave thing to do. As Tech Nine said in the song FRAGILE "If you don't get why I'm so pissed, understand this: I'm an artist and I'm sensitive about my shit, yes, I'm fragile." Show some love for your underdogs, and never give up doing what you love, because you feel like you are gaining no support. Even if you are just getting started, and you feel like all your stuff is horrible, don't take it down, let it be a reminder of how much improvement you have gained.

I skimmed through but as an artist I feel you on being thrown to the wolves. I hate going to family gatherings because people keep asking what I do and what am I up to. I graduated from college 2 years ago everyone knows I'm an artist and graphic designer yet they keep asking what do I do and even going so far as to offer me a "regular" job or tell me who is hiring. They are so used to being in a box and not following their dreams that they don't understand why I'm following mine and giving up things that satisfy them like a consistent paycheck doing something that can't stand working around people they don't like. Yes my career has ups and downs but if I wanted to give up on it I would have and I have not on the strength that I needed to prove myself that I can do this and be happy and ignore those that don't understand. It only seems that other artists or anyone with a freelance career understands us. I have come a long way and I will continue the path that I am on. I encourage others to pursue their passions and when nobody supports you look inside of yourself and just keep going.

That was beautiful. Thanks for sharing that with me. It's a difficult career for people who aren't in it to understand. Its difficult to cultivate a career in graphic design, or any kind of artistic career, especially if you are freelance. Most of the time, people won't understand. But that is no fault nor concern of ours! I'm glad you're pursuing such a wonderful career! I hope to be the same in coming years! I wish you the best of luck! :D

A good mytake for us artists, though I don't ever get the thrown to wolves thing, most of my family knows I paint, and that I apprentice under my father a master oil painter just like the fathers and sons of old. Plus I've always had their support, it helps that in addition to me, both my sisters as well as me inherited my fathers artistic gene and are naturally gifted at art in many forms, instruments , painting, writing etc and we all support each other.

Personally I like to alternate between poetry and dutch master classical oil painting.

@Kalibie Vermeer was an excellent artist, one of the best and one we study, but are style is that of Jan Van Huysum one of the greatest still life artists of the old master era who's secrets and techniques aren't known to us even today.

Don't be afraid to show people! I know it's easier said than done, but if you appreciate your hard work, that is all that matters! I believe that artists love to put what they are feeling inside on paper... our art is a reflection of our hearts, and their condition. Creating an important work of art when you're emotional, can mark a very important spot in your life, where you can look back at it, and remember exactly what you were feeling when you made what you did! Don't be afraid! You already have one supporter right here! :D

I know that my art isn't as good as that of others and 98% of the people I've been around don't share the same talent as I do, so I feel kind of 'different'. I feel sometimes it isn't good enough and wish I had a different talent but when some of them sees what I've done (most of the time by stumbling on it as they rummage through my things), they do think it is beautiful and encourage me to do more. It is true, art is a form of self expression. I've come to love it and what I could do with it, I wouldn't exchange it for any other skill or talent.

Thats awesome! :) and thank you! and I know exactly how you feel. It's difficult to find people who share the same interest that aren't cyber friends. lol. But you know, I'm glad you have come to see your talent as something to admire! I think that's the first step in becoming a true artist... loving everything you create, because no matter how "poor" it may be in the eyes of a "professional" it's still something that marks improvement, and something that you love! We all have our own style!

Value, just like most things that are subjective, is something that is held within. You can't expect other people to make you feel like you have value. Now, success, that is something important. If you have a trade, or a talent that you have a passion for, it's up to you to make a career out of it (if that's what you choose) and become successful at it. Plus, being an artist is just one of many things one can be successful at.
