My Comfort Foods I Had On Acid Reflux

It was only a year ago I came down with acid reflux. As many people who've had it badly know, it's hard to eat almost anything without upsetting your stomach & having that acid come back up. But thankfully for me, I had gained a few comfort foods over time, which I could eat with no problems. I'll share a few with you here. Trigger Warning: Slight mention of irregular/disordered eating & weight issues.

1. Green Bell Peppers

Not being able to have tomatoes is hard when it's in everything. So, it was always nice to see an option that I could replace with the tomato or just have it without. This is where green bell peppers came in. While they weren't my favorite pepper, I became accustomed to it. I still eat them in recipes, and I like them cooked or grilled (I pretty much had to due to my other conditions).

2. Diced Pears

There's only a few fruits that aren't acidic and wouldn't upset my stomach. So, when I first had it, I looked into it and pears was one of them. I never had pears on their own previously, only understanding that it was like a less sweet apple. But soon enough, the fruit & juice became a favorite of mine as a new breakfast food in the mornings.

3. Bananas

I could at least eat one of my favorite fruits on reflux and that was bananas. I'd eat half or all of it in the morning as a breakfast. Or, at least what would fit into my shrunken stomach and could handle it. My dad had wanted me to eat more than just that, but I could not.

4. Egg Whites

Having to not eat too much fried foods, one of the healthiest ways to eat an egg is to boil it. I'd boil them the night before and put them in the fridge after they cooled off. In the morning I'd peel them then season with pepper. I'd mainly eat the white parts of it, but I'd sometimes force myself to eat at least a little bit of the yolks if I could handle it. I'd eat the yolk part with salt of course.

5. Avocado

This underrated fruit is one of my favorites! While I rarely had it, if there was an option to have it on a turkey sandwich or in a salad when we went out to eat, you bet I said yes to ordering it. In fact, it's recommended to eat it because of healthy fats.

6. Mayonnaise

Here's everyone's not so favorite condiment. It may be bland, but it's still tangy. But let's be honest here: If I couldn't have any ketchup, mustard, etc. then what can I eat as a condiment? Well, here it is. I'd always put it on my wraps at Chick-Fil-A, as any other choice was a set up for disaster. Thankfully for me, most sandwiches come with the option of mayo.

7. Ranch Dressing

It could be boring, maybe. But it's still a classic! I liked buttermilk ranch or classic ranch, but I preferred the buttermilk. Anything else and it'd be Taco Bell's avocado ranch.

8. White Breads

I don't know who created you but thank God to whoever did! Honey wheat bread especially gets this because it saved me from wanting sandwiches from outside of the house. The previous healthy bread that was cracked wheat bread made my stomach not feel so good. It caused me very bad burping and I refused to eat it. This was because of the whole wheat in it.

9. Potatoes

There's only so many ways you can have potatoes. But for me, they had to be loaded baked potatoes, scalloped potatoes, and potato soup. No fried foods so that includes french fries, fried potatoes, etc. If I didn't eat my baked potato at dinner, I'd save it tomorrow as a lunch and load it up. If we went out to eat at Texas Roadhouse, I'd order a loaded baked sweet potato and save it for a snack later that night. Eating leftover potato soup for lunch was also good.

10. Fajitas

I couldn't have tacos or any mexican food outside of the house. But at home, we'd make these for dinner. All I had to do is just not take the grilled onions and I was fine. Then put on a little cheese, sour cream, and lettuce. There you go! Acid reflux friendly mexican food. I'd take the leftovers of the fajita stuff and make it into a quesadilla.

11. Sour Cream

Another bland condiment. It's a healthy fat though, so what else to say? I'd put it on baked potatoes, fajitas, quesadillas, tortilla chips and who knows what else.

12. Iceberg Lettuce

My Comfort Foods I Had On Acid Reflux

I'd eat this with plenty of things. It's also good for hydration, as you need to drink lots of water with reflux. Sandwiches, tacos, or even just a small salad, it worked. I had to limit myself on raw fruits & veggies, but this is one I made sure to eat.

13. Macaroni Salad

Don't ask me why, but one of my favorite things at the grocery store was going over to the deli aisle/section. You'll see a few more of these, but for now it's mac salad. As long as it wasn't in an acidic sauce or dressing, carbs is a great thing to eat. The elbow pasta & mayo was soothing, but it also provided me with egg and a few veggies. I'd eat it for lunch or as a side for dinner.

14. Chicken Salad

Whether it was a chicken salad croissant sandwich or just a small tub of chicken salad, I ate it. I'd eat the one in the tub spread on crackers, didn't matter what kind they were as long as they were crackers. I even once made my own pecan & grape chicken salad with canned chicken at home for my lunch one day when I finally dragged myself out of bed. It was good once I ate it, even though the red grapes were a little bit hard for me to eat. And yes, I did put it in the fridge before eating any of it.

15. Tuna

When I first tried this, I wasn't sure if I would like it or not. My mom would take Starkist tuna pouches to work. She said I could try a pouch to see if I liked it or not one day. So, I put a pack of it in the fridge for a little while before I even ate it. Needless to say, I loved it and ate it on crackers. And it had to be the ranch flavored one because any other flavors would be a huge nope to my stomach.

16. Charcuterie & Lunchables

Some of my lunches were a daily thing of crackers, sliced cheese, and meat. I'd have quite a few lunchables in the drawer of the fridge. The meats in them were either: Turkey, chicken, ham, or bologna. Then there'd be chocolate chip cookies, knock off oreos, oatmeal cookies, or chocolate teddy grahams. While red meat isn't exactly the best thing to eat, I'd make myself eat it since my body needed nutrients & lots of protein. The sweet treats reserved as a little motivator, where I could either choose to eat it after I ate the main meal or save for later. Sometimes I'd save for later. But during the holidays I got the job of making the charcuterie before everyone arrived. I did a great job and ate some afterwards, then put it in the fridge to stay cold for everyone else. I'd eat the leftovers of them as a lunch too.

17. Mac & Cheese

Soft macaroni & creamy cheese, what more could you ask for? It's soothing and provides protein, calcium, and carbs. There really isn't much to say here. But I never liked that crappy Kraft brand. I usually ate Velveeta or one of the oven baked mac & cheese you can find in the deli section at the grocery store. I'd heat it up for dinner.

18. Chicken Sandwiches & Chicken Nuggets

I'm going to put both of these in the same section right here. When I was out and about with my friends, the only thing I could eat from fast food places we went to was mainly chicken nuggets. I'd get a Happy Meal from Mc Donalds since it was cheaper and so I could have smaller portion sizes (bigger ones were very overwhelming for me when eating out). Later on though, I found out that I could eat chicken sandwiches and so then I had a new craving on my hands. Not just chicken, but chicken sandwiches with mayo, lettuce, tomato, and brioche bun. The picture shown above is actually a Wendy's meal.

19. Milkshakes

Can't drink soda, tea, or coffee when eating out. So, what'd I do? Get a vanilla milkshake instead. Other than that, it was usually water. Consuming dairy through the daytime was much better than at night. But I'd still eat ice cream and then deal with the bloating, gas build up in my stomach, etc. the next morning. Wasn't fun but by the afternoon I at least got it out of me and felt like eating again. I also ate it because my parents were trying to help me gain back the weight and it was the one thing dad handed to me as a nighttime snack.

20. Brown Rice

Some people aren't so keen on brown rice. But besides being a carb, it provides fiber, magnesium, and B6. It's also light on the stomach and can help aid with digestion. Mom told me that it didn't taste as good as white rice, but when I ate it, I loved it. To me it tasted just as good, except it's the healthier sibling to white rice. If we went to Panda Express, I would ask for the steamed brown rice then chicken or honey walnut shrimp. It helped calm down and make me not so bloated, since I wasn't eating too much fried food. I'd also pick out the brown rice sushi or teriyaki chicken bowls at the small sushi spot in the grocery store if I wanted to get any.

21. Plain Instant Oatmeal

Nothing crunchy is allowed. So, a pack of plain instant oatmeal with hot water will do the trick. It's good for iron & fiber. I'd add bananas and a tiny bit of pb to it. I wasn't suppose to have the peanut butter but I only added a tiny bit to try to get protein in it. It was so little that it wouldn't have upset my stomach, which is a good thing. But it is very filling, I will say that.
