Your Body, Society, & How We’re Ruining Them Both

As most of us are aware, there is no shortage of questions pertaining to penis size and women’s bodies, specifically whether or not they are “okay.” We could be quick to assume that all these people are looking for is a quick ego boost, or that they are simply driven by their own petty insecurities, and perhaps in some cases this is the truth. Regardless of their personal reasons for making such posts, there are other social reasons that make these questions so common: idealism, specifically.

Now I know what you expect me to say: society and the media tries to force us to look a certain way because they expect perfection. This isn’t nearly as true as people think, as they forget that we ourselves are society, yet most of us take no blame for the state of expectations that exists in our world. We blame the media all whilst completely ignoring the fact that the media doesn’t set standards on its own agenda; it OFFERS standards and sets them based off of what we, the consumer, prefer most. The media runs off of consumerism, meaning that as long as WE (society) feed off of this idea of perfection, beauty, size, and so forth, it will never go away – because it’s what we want, and most importantly, what we will buy into. This is why in recent years the plus sized fashion industry has finally made a breakthrough, because enough people chose to try and shift the gears of what is idealistic instead of continuously feeding into the old perception that their bodies were unattractive and that they needed to change to fit the current standard. It’s all in what we want, it isn’t some malevolent, invisible force intentionally setting this standards to be unobtainable. It is simply that our world shifts to meet the desires of what people would have if they could obtain it. When we try to force ourselves to lose weight “obnoxiously fast” with diets and pills or buy penis extenders and pills to enhance performance, all we are truly doing is giving these idealistic standards (that we hate so much) fuel to run off of.

It might be hard for you to believe that you, a single person with insecurities, could make a difference, but that is less true than the idea that all people need to be an unobtainable standard of perfection. Most of us simply choose to not to make the change because we believe that we can’t, that it’s pointless, that it’ll never change; some of us are scared of change, because if people felt good about themselves they wouldn’t try half as hard to please us or meet the high standards that we've become accustomed to. Then, some of us just prefer ignorance, because facing a fight for change is scary. With mentalities like these, change will truly be impossible, which is why I am challenging readers to truly stop and ask themselves why perfection, idealism, size, beauty – is so important if it is affecting society to such a point that there are negative repercussions. If we truly think that the media and society are setting such shitty standards … why should we continue to buy into them?

You decide.
