5 Sad Songs That'll Make You Shed a Tear (or Two)

It's good to have a fun time, but sometimes we need to be reminded about the problems in this world in order to appreciate those in need. What follows are, in my opinion, the five best sad songs ever recorded.

5. How to Save a Life by The Fray

This is the artist's recollection of his struggles helping a seventeen year old who had lost his only friend. He had resorted to drugs and cutting himself. The artist stayed up with him all night, attempting to counsel him.

4. Do They Know It's Christmas by Band Aid

A 1980s classic, this Christmas song examines the sharp contrast of celebrating the holidays in the developed world with places that struggle to provide for their basic needs. It was produced for charity.

3. Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day

This song details the heartbreaking thoughts of a boy after his father died of cancer when he was just ten years old.

2. 100 Years by Five For Fighting

100 years in four minutes. That's what you experience in this song, the moral being "life is short". It ends with the tragedy of being ninety nine years old and looking back upon one's life.

1. Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning by Alan Jackson

As the anniversary of the horrific event that inspired this song approaches, I think Alan Jackson does an excellent job of summarizing people's reactions to it, so we can recognize and remember what that day was like.
