Why Feminism is Necessary in this Society!

I know why feminism has gotten a bad rep lately and that's due to the dumb women who are calling themselves feminists while hating on men and treating them unfairly. Using their gender to their advantage, a lot of women act like jerks and I am completely aware of that ...so in no way am I saying that men are all bad and women are innocent. Men are biased on basis on their gender too. I know that.

I grew up in India, in a quiet progressive city. I have observed a lot of things regarding gender and how both are treated .This is the few reasons that I think why feminism is needed where I grew up.

1. Girls are not treated equally in families

The boy in most families is mostly looked up at and his opinion is something that matters the most. The girl is not even given a chance to speak up and if she has opinions she is called "controlling" or "interfering". Growing up , the girl thinks that she is worthless and this lasts a lifetime. The girl is told that her parents family is not her real family and her real home is her husband's home where she would serve her in- laws and bow down to their every demand. In most cases, the husband controls everything from the kind of clothes she wears to how she wears her jewellery. Marriages turn abusive at times and the girl is supposed to ignore it for the sake of her reputation.

2. Unfairness in dating

While dating is becoming more common and arranged marriages are decreasing, some bias still remains. Men usually prefer women who are virgins while they themselves have slept around a lot. Women are treated like a possession and her opinion is not respected. The guy is never interested in the girls passions but is really interested in her salary (this goes for girls too). This is the main reasons a lot of girls (including me) stay virgins(for the fear of being called a ho) and completely refrain from dating (it's better to never have sexual and emotional relationship if you are gonna be treated like crap).

3. Skin colour

Fair skin is preferred over the rest but this usually applies to girls. Girls are told that they would never be beautiful if they are not "white skinned" and basically have no worth. I am not extremely dark myself but still some people tell me not to get too tan cause it will mean I am not pretty and after all women's beauty and virginity is seen as their only asset.

4. Right to exist

Female birth is seen as bad and females are aborted because of their gender. There are laws to prevent it but it still happens. Which is why the ratio of men to women is messed up.

I know that guys are also facing bias but these are the ones that girls face.

At no point has feminism done anything for these issues. They simply use it as a reason when they have nothing else to use.

In India, there is something to fight for, so I think feminism would work because it would actually focus on fixing issues, real issues. The more women make feminism only about women and their "struggles," the less men are going to appreciate them. Yes, men face bias but where exactly? Feminists have no idea, their only fight is for themselves and not true equality between genders by focusing on both men and women.

How has dating ever been unfair to women now, except perhaps now that they're treated equally and also expected to have equal responsibility by initiating and also paying for dates? Women have been treated like possessions because they expected themselves to be, by playing hard to get and making the man work for her time and effort. Men only care about a woman's salary? Well, this is because women are also expected these days to have a salary. Women have only ever cared about a man's salary in the past, but of course, it's sexist or unnecessary for men to have their own preferences about how much she makes. I hear it all the time in women, they're only going to date/marry the man who makes just as much or more than they do. You're going to see a lot more men expecting women to have money because of the educational inequality between genders, where women are treated better in education and graduate college (and even high-school) at higher rates. Get used to it, you might be the breadwinner in your relationship.

Which brings me to the next point: beauty is also a matter of preference. The problem with feminism is that it tries to destroy beauty standards so that everybody is beautiful, more specifically fat people. The reality is that this will never be the case. Fat is ugly. Women need to get over it and stop trying to change the world to be accepting of themselves for every little thing.

What I am saying is, in dating a woman is either not allowed to have a job after she's married or only allowed to have a job cause she's earning money that will help the guy and his family use it. Women who use the money they have earned for themselves for their personal needs are called "controlling" and "uncultured" cause if they don't spend all of it on their husbands family, then they are not family oriented. They are treated like unpaid slaves. Also in dating everyone has a colour preference I know but this is not about that. Being extremely fat and extremely dark are two different things. Being dark is not unhealthy. But society bases a woman's worth and how they treat her based on her skin colour which leads to a lot of insecurities. Got it?

I think it sets a better example to have pepole that are fit and healthy as the face of beauty fitness models as opposed to sometimes very thin supermodels and body positive models. Even if half the population is overweight from the flood of sugar everywhere with

I was thinking how the media and public would have reacted if the person was a woman or black. If they were a women, she probably wouldn't have been physically pulled from the plan. neither are men. Ever heard of terms like daddies little princess? men are forced to grow maturity wise and have a lot of responsibility INCLUDING things like never hit back even if your sister started it, owning up for your sisters mishaps etc. people are MUCH more laid back when a girl does something bad in the west.

again, men have the same problem. a lot of the time men have to go above and beyond with insane amounts of effort to get a girl that he wants. He is often expected to pay by a lot of traditional folk and should be working at a fairly high paying job. First take a look at what feminism has done.

Feminism has not equaled out the salary gap... there still is a gap.

their bodies are different. the basic thinking is opposite.
every thing about men and woman is opposite, not equal.
women give birth, men cannot

These problems are non existent in West and women have pretty much many rights there ( in fact Indian laws also give many rights to women, problem is poor implementation and flawed judiciary system). If fair skin thing is not true, then why until now we had only womens fairness creams? This industry is booming like anything here.
If unfair treatment thing wasn't true, there wouldn't be low male-to-female ratio in various states here. In fact, I have read that this ratio is lower in even urban, affluent areas. There wouldn't be honor killings. If you are not aware, almost 40% women are married at young age. There would be no victim blaming after actual molestation or raped case. I was touched inappropriately in local and when I told this incident to few people I know, no one person said that it was that guys' fault. They were like "oh but why you had to board gents compartment?" But that is not excuse to completely ignore women's issues which are there and pretend as if India is the best for women to be. You haven't said anything about victim blaming that goes on in actual rape or molestation cases. Just look at Nirbhaya case. Some godmen and politicians made insensitive comments about her and got away with it. On 31st night, many women in Bangalore were molested in full public. You didn't say anything about female foeticide.
Women with no kids are shamed (in villages and low income groups, men marry other woman so that she can give him kids), women who are single/divorced/widowed are seen as "easy". Trust me, I have seen that in cities too.
Many temples all over the country still don't allow women inside.

The reason was because women consumed food but unlike the males they did not produce it. So if your family was a certain size you needed more males in order to produce enough food to sustain the family. It had nothing to do with men being evil or sexist, in fact it had to do with the utilitarian view of males, they where tools. One could in fact argue that it was sexist towards males as they where only scene as useful so long as they did the grueling manual labor (hence any male that had a defect was also abandoned/killed, he served no purpose to the family). Same thing with india (and the rest of the world), its just women and feminist have significantly better PR then men do, especially since we are biologically predisposed to care about them and be apathetic to men.

Feminism is a solution looking for a problem. It has run out of things to complain about and is now actively making shit up to stay relevant. Women are actively sought after over men to fill gender quotas, obtaining most of the scholarships while men languish academically, and receive leniency in the courts.

I come from a different culture, so I can't speak personally on the issues that you have brought up. But I do agree that there remains discrimination against women that takes many forms, and overall I agree with you.

But you recognized that the word "feminism" can take many different forms with different, frequently conflicting ideas. Are you concerned that this development has rendered the term meaningless or ineffective? What role do you think the term plays in the world today when you bear the weight of all the opinions of every person who declares themselves a feminist? Or do you feel that you do not bear that weight?

There's a difference between the ideals and the way the movement is.
I support some of the things such as removing gender roles and just doing what make sense as a couple and women accepting that they can ask us out as well and that its not any worse for them to fool around than for us to.
But the movement has awful lot of pepole especially leading it who don't respect men and see us as bad and they bring up issues like domestic abuse and make it seem like it only happens to women and out right refuse to acknowledge the problems men suffer such as having far less support if there homeless or there a victim.

This discrimination takes place because different people are forced to share the same living space. It will happen wether you like it or not. Take a look at every society were different groups of people are forced to live together. What occurs is conflict. History alone is the best teacher on that but most people today are dumb enough to not care about it. Take a look at any society where homogenous people live together. I once looked at some advertisements in an Indian dating site.
It seemed that at least two thirds of the advertisements had something to the effect of 'light skinned', or 'would pass for white', or 'would almost pass for white'. That seems to be a big thing in India.
It might go some way to explain why Indian girls and then women have hit on me since I was a teenager.

I absolutely agree with feminism. I think woman are more adept to lead. They're smarter, more rational, better under pressure, not as reactive, less judgmental and so much mkre. I in no way support feminism but I also don't see how any of these points have anything to do with feminism. The first point about the family just means you had a bad family life. I know my sister got look up upon more than me. So it isn't a gender thing. Second point, there are lots of unfair situations in dating for men too ie always paying for a date or always the one to ask for a date. What you complained about here is men's preference in women. You can't change that because people are going to be attracted to what they like. It is the same as complaining about women wanting a tall, dark and handsome man who is rich and famous. Third point, that's just racism has nothing to do with gender. I don't see your point. Fourth point, do you have any proof of this? I feel like it could be a made up fact and not true. Best I can think is in Asian countries where families were only allowed to have one child.

I am only talking about India and it's society. This is my perspective and i have a right to speak it. I know there are a lot of unfair situations towards men too but in my society i have seen mostly women who are subjected to a lot of restrictions. Point no. 1 happens more than you think Female opinion here is seen as secondary and families treat women badly. Second point is about hypocrisy of society when it comes to dating. Preference is different. Society expects women to be a certain way where men are given freedom to act as they wish. Third point is not about racism. Indians are all of same race but colour discrimination still happens where women are more subjected to it cause a woman should be fair. I don't care if men prefer a certain Colour but telling women they are ugly because they aren't fair is wrong. Indian couples can have as many children as they wish but there have been a lot of cases where girl child is aborted for their gender. There are campaigns to prevent this.
