Issues Facing Modern Day Youth

With society making a drastic change from the 1900’s to the millennial age, below are a few issues that I’ve noticed with the youth firsthand.

Issues Facing Modern Day Youth

Bullying and Suicide

From firsthand experience back in middle school and in high school, bullying is tolerated by the school system. It is something that should be taken more seriously, as teens more and more teens are dying or are at the brink of death with the school systems paying less attention to the well being of children in dire need rather than the well being of the children as a whole. I know it would be difficult for the administration staff to watch over hundreds of kids while also having other responsibilities with the school, but suicide ratings are overwhelming, many having to do with bullying, causing severe depression among today's youth.

Poverty

As well as financial issues with single parent households. My first friend is always my favorite example with her and her sisters living with their mother. With that, poverty can cause social and educational impairment. Without money to pay for tutoring or counseling needed or the resources to assist with schoolwork and reading/comprehension skills, those in poverty will have trouble achieving any goals that desire, on top of possible health concerns if the household is also unable to take care of good quality food and water.

Social Interaction

Today, just about everyone has a cellphone, and many of us know that much of the time, it's pretty much glued to our faces. People would prefer to be on their phones instead of meeting new people around them. Without the cellphone creating a new social interaction with others, people would have fun with the people around them, work, or find other entertaining ways of bettering themselves or their experiences such as reading or practicing art, like my father. I've had many situations where a full room I entered was dead quiet, all because people were texting on their phones.

Alcohol Abuse

I remember back in middle school when a buddy of mine had gotten insanely drunk, causing him to lose his balance and later go crazy when his buttons were pushed. Point is, things like smoking or taking other drugs such as heroine, cocaine, and most commonly weed, cause great health problems, as well as additivity. Because of the nicotine stored in these products, I was told that once you start, you won't be able to stop. I believe it.

Discrimination

And finally, many kids are still discriminated based off of the color of their skin, the religion they bear, or the sexual orientation that they have, adding to the issue with bullying. Police targeting on the streets are common examples.

Have you ever faced any of these issues before as a teen, or even an adult?
