They say this often at times, because it is a... bar... a place where people go to drink, sometimes do drugs, dance, be stupid and silly, and party. And because it is seen as a party place they don't see those who work at such establishments as having real jobs. They see it as you going to the bar to have fun and to party yourself, because just look at the movie, "Coyote Ugly" with women dancing on the bar and being stupid themselves. Therefore, in a sense, it is greatly the media's fault for the misconception and the ignorance of the people talking to you and saying go get a real job, because they don't realize you ARE doing a real job in the first place. That's my bottom line.

Because they're judgmental pricks. Any job where you perform a service and get paid is a job. Doesn't matter what level it's at.
Bars could not exist without bartenders working them so there's no reason to demean them just because they get paid in tips.
I don't bartend but I have friends who do and it can be a demanding job especially when it's busy, you gotta know how to make mixed drinks, and take care of everyone in a timely manner.
I mean no job should be demeaned but in the end, they're still working.
Anything that is Either a Pay Check or an Under the Table Deal Is... A Real Job.
Next time Someone, hun, Confront You with this, tell them This: "I am lucky to even Have a job Today."
By Them Telling you to "Get a Real Job," is the Meaning of Having a Career that you Maybe can Make More Money, But Believe me... Doesn't Always Happen in Some Particular Fields. xx
Because it's not a 'career'. It's stupid cause people think everyone can have a career and nobody can just work a regular job and if they do like they fail at life. Fuck off. There's more to life than a career.
i always figured bartending was tough cuz you have to deal with drunk people and that it paid fairly well because you get good tips, but never done it myself so i dont know
I have no idea why that is... I'd say "well it's better then the job you don't have, wit yo employed ass" 😂😂

because some people are judgmental. if you perform a service for which you get paid that is a job in my opinion
If it help pays the bills, rent, tuition, gas or transportation then it is a real job. It may not be some corporate job, or always a job that comes with full benefits. I really don't understand, if they say that then they would mean that waitstaff isn't a real job either.
What kind of a "real job" specifically do they expect you to get or go into? And what do those people and your friends do to support themselves for a living?because they don't consider bars "a place of work," but they don't understand that the reason they can think that is because someone else is working very hard to make it seem that way, on purpose.
Depends does it pay to be a bartender, I worked as a bartender through college and liked it just fine. Id at best consider it a stop gap part time job. I dont consider any a real job unless you can support yourself through it, if you can't and live at home with your parents then you dont have a real job.
you are exchanging services on a task for money in a pre descriped role, pretty sure that's a job
dont let these people get to you they sound like judgmental douche bags, you do what you gotta do to get that green to live broski and if you enjoy it bonusIt is a real job, but it has very limited upward mobility, so it's hard to consider it a career. Does that make sense?
Agree with you, that's always bothered me to when people say that but what they really mean is a job with a future and that you can advance in. A career. They should say that though and not sum it up by saying "real job"
I also bartend, but I do it part time on the weekends because I have a real job! jk, I love it and will continue to do it for a long time. I think its a real job.
bartenders make as much as engineers and some bottle service chicks at clubs make as much as secior managers making over 100k.
these days degrees and titles dont mean shit its all about how much you take homeSome people say its not a real job because its not a carreer. I disagree. Its a real job and you are paid real money. You get a lot of practical experience from such a job, i know because i also have been a bartender.
Because it's not a career, pay is low and the hours are impossible if you have a family.
People are assholes. They are just focused on corporate America.
It's a real job.
Money is money.
Your friends aren't financing you so their opinion doesn't matter. They're jealous of your lack of extreme physical investment
Many people do it as a part time job for some extra cash
Beertenders make more than a lot of people (in certain areas)
It's not aspirational enough for people. They think you can do better than a bartender.
To me bartending is more of a side job since the pay is not usually great, even servers make more money than bartenders methinks.
because standing around, drinking beer, and listening to peoples problems all day, isn't a job
it's a real job at least your not a stripper.
