Why is a small comment eg so and so is a black c**t considered worse than say a person who abuses children?
Do you think people take racism issues too seriously?
I think in America there is a problem that on the one hand, you've got serious problems with crass cases of racism and on the other hand, there's a culture of political correctness where people take things way too personally and assume something to be meant in a racist way although it wasn't. Sadly, the former tends to be swiped under the carpet whereas the latter tends to be constantly spoken about. For example nobody ever talks about the economic discrimination of black people. Right-wingers act as though police brutality against minorities doesn't exist. That's fucked up. On the other hand, the US media makes a big drama about some stupid person being politically incorrect. People should try to be less sensitive but care more about actual discrimination.
In my own country, it's kind of the opposite. We don't have any actual racism. We don't have any racial tensions and people get along very well without discrimination. However, Swiss people are terrible at political correctness and sometimes I hear conservatives say stuff that I think is completely inappropriate (and very hurtful). If Americans heard these kind of things, it would make their jaws drop.
Real racism is a problem, but it's also a problem when anything is racist. Like if you say you don't like a certain person, who happens to be a minority, you get called racist, when you simply don't like their personality. Or if you say certain girl, who happens to be a minority, is not attractive, you get called racist :/
Media knows racism gets them lots of attention, so they blow things out of proportion. The word "racism" has a lot of power (starting to decrease due to its misuse), and the media knows that. They know calling something racist will give them more news, and plenty of content for a while, so they exploit that.
The problem is that racism isn't really taken seriously, cause if that was the case, any case of racism will be taken seriously, but that's not what happens. Only racism to certain races/ethnicities gets taken seriously, and people are getting tired of this, because it only leads to more racism and division.
When you are silent about an issue that effects you, you allow it to happen time and time again. There was a time and place where "little issues" of racism were allowed to go unchecked until the very people it was aimed at, got fed the hell up with their mistreatment, and fought tooth and nail so that someone in 2017 who felt the same levels of injustice could go to the media, could speak up in a comments section, could protest, could enact new laws to protect them against mistreatment, and so on.
The easy thing for certain people to say now is, racism doesn't exist, or why is this or that even a problem, but if it were something that effected you, if it was sexism or homophobia or someone attacking your religion, would you be okay with not standing up for yourself, your friends, your family? When is it ever a good idea to just let someone treat you like a second class citizen. The answer is never.
Having experienced it, and having known people who have experienced really hurtful racist interactions-no, I don't think it can ever be taken too seriously because it can cause a world of damage to a person.
About the insult you mentioned, it's just weird and not necessary to add someone's skin color as a part of the insult-if the person abuses children, that's their action. They are being called out for something bad they did. Adding skin color as an insult is insulting everyone else with that skin color, people that didn't necessarily do anything bad and you're attacking something they can't change or shouldn't try to.
The word or action has so much history behind it, so when something happens or someone says something, people are going to say something. People are just tired of being picked on or called names. This goes for all races.
Every bad word has a history about it. Why are racial words way worse?

Yep. I mean in the perfect world I can call someone a gwailou and he can call me a slope-fuck and we can have a laugh about it.
People keep on forgetting the context and only look at things at face value.
This is why people don't take racism claims seriously anymore.
I think people call things racist when it isn't. For example the oscars last year didn't "have enough black people" so this year they are actually taking the colour of the actor into account (hardly a step foreword).
Do I think it's overblown when it actually happens? No. Not at all. It should never be ok for someone to be racist.
I think many people actually don't understand what racism is and use the word way too often.
Yes I agree. And it seems like there's no such thing as racism to white people.
That's actually what I meant. Even on here, some people (actually 2 Black women) will say one thing is racist if it happens to a Black person, but the exact same thing happening to a White person, and she is fine with it. Those are the actual racist people. Their ignorance prevents them from using logical reasoning.
The media love to push racism because it keeps the victim complex going, it keeps the rift between the races going.
The black community loves to bring up race every change they get, but then tell white people to "stop seeing color", for basically the same reason. It allows the victim complex to thrive. Which then allows there to be things like United Negro college fund, black lives matter, job quotas, education quotas, etc.
I don't know about taking it too seriously, but people care too much about race, for both the better and for the worse; just to prove racism or to disprove it. And doing anything and everything in their power to fit a confirmation bias about it. It's fucking ridiculous
Yeah I have black friends and we make racist jokes within good banter to each other a lot. People are very sensitive today.
I think the word "racist" is thrown around so much... that people dont care anymore. The liberals are always screaming and calling people racist.
racism is bs, I'm white and proud of it and so should be everyone else about their heritage there's nothing about my "race" that I could take as offensive so I don't really get it lol people keep making up reasons to feel butthurt
racism is real. and those who don't understand have more learning to do.
Some of it is but a lot of it isn't.
Yes, and they should. Racism is disgusting and despicable. A person should be judged by their actions and character, not what's on the outside.
no, looking back at history and how so many people have continuously died over conflicts en-mass between groups, i think it is necessary to talk about it.
So what you think we should live in the past and feel guilty about being white?
no, we should address any biases and behaviours that can cause to an uprising of that mentality again aggressively. Genocide historically is a common occurrence.
In this day and age in western countries, white people would probably more likely be on the receiving end. But they can't complain about it.
Of violence due to frustration, yes. But not on the receiving end of biased behaviours.
Maybe not you in particular, but people that look like you are pulling this, statistically...
The media takes racism way too seriously, they always throw diesel on the fire.
Too seriously? Racism is generally not taken seriously at all...
Only if it is perceived white-on-black racism. It is is black-on-white racism no one gives a shit.
Why not expose racism? Racism is most definitely a serious problem.
Most of what you probably consider racism isn't, and there a much bigger issues out there.
I don't think the problems of the world are competing with one another for our time and consideration. I feel like we are perfectly capable of tackling many different issues at the same time.
There's nothing wrong with calling out someone who is racist or abuses children. It's not like I sit back and say "Oh sorry abused children, someone is being racist, I can't deal with this right now".
Most people just want a better world. So they will deal with whatever issues are causing problems in their neighbourhoods.
As I said if it's actual proper racism then yes. But everything seems to be racist now even if it really isn't.
because it is a big issue
Yes.
No it's really not.
Ya definitely
