How to catch a CATFISH!

Catfishing 101!

Catfishing has become increasingly popular and increasingly easy to achieve. Lets face it, a lot of us are gullible when it comes to love and friendship.

Now, being the most gullible person on the planet I've become quite good at catching/ calling out catfishes so I thought I would share my top tips on how to catch your own.

Tip #1

When being approached by a random stranger on the internet, always and I mean ALWAYS do a reverse image search on their picture. It's so simple and can save you instantly.

Here is how you do it:

On desktop- Open google images and drag and drop image into search bar.

On phone- Save or screenshot an image and go to https://ctrlq.org/google/images/.

If his or her image shows up there then you have most likely got a catfish on your hands (or should I say rod).

Tip #2

If step 1 turns out clean but you are still suspicious. Ask questions. It's simple, but it takes time. Ask a personal question and write down the answer somewhere safe, then a week or two later ask it again and see if the story changes.

Tip #3

Ask for their phone number or ask if you can video chat. Although there are people that have legit excuses to not be able to do this, if other things don't add up then you probably have a catfish.

Tip #4

Don't get personal until you are 1000000% positive that the person you are talking to is who they say they are.

Tip #5

If you find out that they are in fact not who they say they are don't just let them go, report them and warn other people!

Yup these are the things i indeed do by default. Another step instead of just googling the image is googling there username and e-mail adress. That way i once found out 'Maria' infact was a homosexual from peru. Luckily i found that out within the first 10 minutes so nothing really happened.

As for the voice and video chatting, this should not feel forced. If someone i barely know wants to video chat or see a picture of me ill decline. Voice chatting i am more comfortable with and dont genuinely mind. If i trust her enough ill eventually turn on my webcam but only if we have gotten close and only if its a girl i am interested in or very close friends with. Thats because i really value privacy.

meh, I think there are missing quite a few important points. also, image search is very unreliable and if someone knows about it, then it's a matter of seconds to make the pic disappear from it.

and most people are most likely not willing to give out their phone number or video chat just to prove someone that they are real, catfish or not. Maybe pics, but you have to be careful with them because they can be easily faked

Also all of these tips work best when put together, obviously there are more things to watch out for but these are the top things I look for when talking to someone new online.

no, you can't but you can edit the pic so it's not recognized by google anymore. takes you a few seconds. Flipping it horizontally, cropping, changing the colors... there are many ways to change it so google algorithms don't recognize it anymore. That's why it is also a bad idea to screenshot it to search like you say... you fuck up the results.

Or, you just take pics from a site that isn't tracked by google. Or a closed forum. There are plenty out there. Also, google image search is actually not that effective... there are other reverse image services which often find something when google doesn't. E. g. yandex, tineye, etc. There are also sites that use on multiple search engines simultaneously.

There is also much more to pay attention when it comes to images then just doing reverse image search. Does the image fit with the information of the user? How old does the image look like? Etc. There is so much more about images to check then just doing a reverse image search.

You completely ignore their activity on the site, which is at least as important as the images. Most catfishes are guys pretending to be girls, and most do it to get some form or sexual gratification. Do they only post sexual stuff? Do they follow only girls and only do sexual comments on girls opinions even though they pretend to be heteo?`Do they pretetend to do basically everything a guys fantasy has to offer? Do they have a private profile and private messages activated even though they have only just registered? Etc. There is so much to check before you actually start asking questions.

And that's just the start, there is more like e. g. photoshopped proof pics. 2 of your tips are not about catching them, one is unrealistic / takes the wrong approach and on one of the most important ones it barely scratches the surface. That's why I said meh, I don't really like it because there is missing too much

To give you an example about spotting catfishes with images other than reverse image search.

@LittleAmyP made a hdil question about a photoshoot which "she" apparently had that day or a day before. it was winter and she says she lives in Belgium... but that pic she posted was under green trees and it was obvious that it wasn't Belgium and definitely not at that time of the year. Said that... instantly blocked and question deleted.

If you then also look at the stuff she posts or comments like "Being naughty isn't bad" on the profile... alarm should turn on

Funny enough, the girls that I talk to now thought that I was a fraud at first until I passed all of the test that you mentioned. Haha. There are plenty of frauds on this site and some of them are so obvious.
