Why is my ex texting me anonymously?

He sent me a text from an unknown number saying that he got my text. I never text him. I found out it was him and he has a new number. So how would I have text him, if I didn't even know he had a new phone and number. Apparently he has 2 phones now.

We haven't spoke in so long, and when I text him that I don't know who this is, he doesn't reply. I called the number and he didn't pick up. Then he calls me back that night.

Is he playing games? And why?
