Why can't some men own up to helping their wife care for their children?

My husband never helps me, I'm overwhelmed, stressed, make his dinners while handling the kids. He sits downstairs and plays computer games while I struggle.

He probably sincerely assumes that by being the breadwinner, he has scored lots of points, and now he's just respectfully allowing you to do your part. If you want him to help with the kids, first of all start showing him your appreciation for going to work everyday and making sure that there's always money for food. It probably stresses him more than you realize about the idea of ever losing his job, and worrying about how he will support you and the kids. After that, just calmly ask him if he would do something specific, like put the kids to bed. If he grumbles, don't back down or get resentful. Just let him process the request. If he says no, show him your trust in him that he would if he could, and say, 'ok, no problem'. And maybe after a few instances of you remaining in a positive attitude, he will eventually want to help willingly. If he says, 'I've already worked so hard to day', simply say calmly 'me too. Would you please help with the task?'. Never imply that you work harder than him (even if it's true), as that will only build resentment and guilt in him, and he won't respond.
