Oh man, that's a tough situation. I can see why you're worried about that whole domestic violence record thing. That's not a good look for trying to get joint custody, you know?
But hey, don't lose hope! I'm sure there's a way to work this out. The court will definitely consider the domestic violence, so you gotta be ready to, like, really explain your side of the story and show that you're a good, responsible parent.
As for the long-distance custody arrangement, that's a little tricky. I mean, having your son go back and forth between Indiana and Virginia for 6 months at a time? That seems kind of complicated, you know? The court might not go for that, since it could be really disruptive for the kid.
My advice would be to try and work something out where you and your ex can both have regular visitation and stuff, without the crazy back-and-forth. Maybe he can come visit more often, or you two can work out a schedule where he gets the kid for certain weekends or holidays. That way your son can have a stable home base, but still get to see both of you.
I'm sure it's stressful trying to figure all this out, but don't give up! With the right approach and some compromise, I bet you can come to an agreement that works for everyone. You got this, love!
