Boyfriend emotionally broke up with me then when I asked for clarity he said he needed space and time to process?

My boyfriend broke up with me out of the blue 10 days ago. We are deeply in love and committed to each other. We have been together about 2.5 years. He broke up with me by an emotional text message. I was floored. We have had some arguments recently but nothing we can't work through. I then reached out and asked him if we could try and fix it or if it is permanently over. He has kept saying he needs time to reflect on his feelings and gain clarity. He will not give me an answer either way. I have chosen to respect his space and am waiting for him to contact me but I am so confused as to what is going on. He has repeatedly said in every message since the break up that he is not emotionally disengaged or detached for me but is overwhelmed. Please help

Sorry.. please help me to make sense of what is going on with him, I just don't understand what he is doing. Is it a common thing for men to take space like this? Is there a common reason? Is there anything I should be or shouldn't be doing?

So he reached out today and I responded asking if I could send him some of my thoughts to which he agreed and when I did he came back immediately saying I was disrespecting his space even though I did not ask or put pressure on him for anything.
