You talk to her to see if she is interesting, and you should learn more than what an online profile would tell you anyway, which isn't much. I mean, most people like movies and music and want someone who respects them, so what is the revelation there?

But why would I want to waste their time and mine? The whole point of online dating is to find out about people BEFORE you meet them, so you don't have to have those awkward conversations. If a tool has been invented, you use it. Do you see anyone riding horses on the road anymore? Not unless they're Amish.

If online profiles were that effective at screening, sure. But they are not, and a good convo can screen people out a lot of the time. Even with online profiles, you have to message each other back in forth and meet up in person, so it's not like it's some infallible tool of diagnosis.
