Ghosting is far worse than rejecting someone. At least when you reject someone, they know why you no longer want to be with them. Yes, it hurts being rejected, but at least it offers the person some closure to move on with his or her life.
If you're ghosted, you don't know why it's over.
Did the person lose interest, are they hurt or did something happen to them, did you offend them? All those thoughts run through our minds and we wonder WHY you stopped talking or seeing us.
Yeah, eventually he'll get the hint, but he's still going to attempt to contact and reach out to you, hoping you're okay or will come back. It's not really fair to him.
In your circumstance, the reason he's not getting the hint is because you're "politely" rejecting him. NO. You can't do that if he's not catching the hint. Point blank tell him that you're not interested in a relationship with him. You don't have to be rude about it or beat around the bush; just be upfront and honest with him.
I think ghosting would be worse. While yes, rejection can hurt, I feel it's much more respectful and doesn't keep the person wondering about what went wrong and possibly thinking it was something they did, when it could've just been that you two weren't a good match and it wasn't anybody's fault.
If you reject the person in a polite, yet honest way, I think most people will appreciate that much more than you just disappearing out of nowhere.

If he is not taking a hint, then stop giving hints and be very direct. Call him and say, "I've tried being polite and giving you hints and that hasn't worked so I am going to be very direct and blunt. I am not attracted to you, I cannot envision us ever being a couple, and you are wasting my time and yours. If you persist in trying to pursue me, I will block you on all media and, if that doesn't work, I will get a restraining order against you. I really don't want to resort to such extreme measures so please leave me alone. There is nothing further to discuss so goodbye."
You might be being too polite. Say it again, but be a bit more direct now (but still nice). Say something like "I've tried to tell you I'm not interested and I don't feel like you are taking me seriously, please stop asking me, otherwise this is going to affect our friendship" (if you have one? lol). You just have to be a bit more direct with him. But don't ghost. I mean, if you try this and he still comes around, then maybe you have to lol, but otherwise I'd never ghost someone. It's disrespectful, childish and immature. But if he's being that back to you, then?

Ghosting is worse unless they know why they are being ghosted or the reason is so obvious it doesn't require being told.
Ghosting is the worst option. If this guy doesn't get your hints, be direct. Men are usually direct creatures, hints & hidden meanings go right over our head a lot of times. Tell him flat out you don't want to talk to him & why. If he persists after that, then block.
Ghosting is much worse than rejecting someone. It is cowardly and rude. Men are not so upset by confrontation - that is how problems are solved. Don't give him a hint, be blunt. You can stop communicating with him after that and he knows where he stands.
Ghosting and hinting are both bad. Ghosting is straight disrespecting his time and shows cowardice. Guys are too stupid to take hints when we like someone. Just tell him straight up how you feel. It WILL hurt at first, but he will respect you for it afterwards.
Rejecting is better. It gets to the point and a person can get over it and move on. Ghosting just drags it out and makes things worse. It's actually better to be harsh and honest. If you liked a guy, would you rather (maybe not right in that moment) know he's not interested and be done with it, or just get ghosted by him and have every possible thought and situation go on in your head about how it must be something else other then ghosting.
I'd say a polite this isn't going to work. And explain just that you don't see a relationship between you two being healthy. And as such you think it would be better to remain friends rather than take a path that could ruin the friendship. Not every "friendzone" has to be with the toxic connotations society has created. Sometimes friendships end up being more like sibilings. And so long as your okay with that and enjoy each others company. Who's to say having guy friends as a friend forever/bro.
Ghosting is worse. I can definitely understand your sympathy for the guy but honestly its a tough world and the guy has to get the message weather it hurts his feelings or not. Maybe its the boomer talking in me but there are worse things than rejection.
Ghosting is worse. If he doesn't get the polite rejection, just be clearer. Say "sorry, I'm not interested in a relationship with you" no need to be rude or mean to make your point.
Ignoring someone without explanation is incredibly rude and does hurt worse than straight up rejection.
In my opinion ghosting hurts worse then rejection. If u put on the big girl panties and be straight with me I can respect that... there's NO respect in ghosting someone... just shows me that ur a coward with no character.
Ghosting by far. Rejection at least let’s the rejected know that they will be unable to contact each other so it is easier for both sides to realize to put their efforts elsewhere. Ghosting just leaves the ghosted confused and still wondering if they ghoster was still interested or not. After they realized that they won’t hear from them anytime soon the constant wondering of what they did wrong if anything will drive them nuts. Don’t ghost, no one learns from those.
Ghosting is definitely worse, it's the way of cowards. Then again, many pathetic individuals simply can't handle rejection, that's why ghosting is even a thing. So no, you have no possible way of doing it right, and that's the price you pay for your neverending bill of privileges and freebies as a female in the world of dating. That's just life for ya :)
If you told him "No, thanks" you don't owe him anything further. Everytime you respond it just encourages him to keep asking. Stop answering and he'll stop asking.

Ghosting is much worse than flat out rejection, in my opinion. Yeah they both suck but getting ghosted tends to mess with your head A LOT more than getting rejected and lasts much longer.
