Ghosting is far worse than rejecting someone. At least when you reject someone, they know why you no longer want to be with them. Yes, it hurts being rejected, but at least it offers the person some closure to move on with his or her life.

Did the person lose interest, are they hurt or did something happen to them, did you offend them? All those thoughts run through our minds and we wonder WHY you stopped talking or seeing us.
Yeah, eventually he'll get the hint, but he's still going to attempt to contact and reach out to you, hoping you're okay or will come back. It's not really fair to him.
In your circumstance, the reason he's not getting the hint is because you're "politely" rejecting him. NO. You can't do that if he's not catching the hint. Point blank tell him that you're not interested in a relationship with him. You don't have to be rude about it or beat around the bush; just be upfront and honest with him.
I think ghosting would be worse. While yes, rejection can hurt, I feel it's much more respectful and doesn't keep the person wondering about what went wrong and possibly thinking it was something they did, when it could've just been that you two weren't a good match and it wasn't anybody's fault.
If you reject the person in a polite, yet honest way, I think most people will appreciate that much more than you just disappearing out of nowhere.

This guys got it. Also, when you ghost someone, you leave no definitive closure. In this day and age it's becoming worthless for girls to hide behind hints because they barely mean anything anymore, thanks to girls. They now have multiple meanings which means they're no longer effective.

You might be being too polite. Say it again, but be a bit more direct now (but still nice). Say something like "I've tried to tell you I'm not interested and I don't feel like you are taking me seriously, please stop asking me, otherwise this is going to affect our friendship" (if you have one? lol). You just have to be a bit more direct with him. But don't ghost. I mean, if you try this and he still comes around, then maybe you have to lol, but otherwise I'd never ghost someone. Ghosting is worse unless they know why they are being ghosted or the reason is so obvious it doesn't require being told.
Ghosting is the worst option. If this guy doesn't get your hints, be direct. Men are usually direct creatures, hints & hidden meanings go right over our head a lot of times. Tell him flat out you don't want to talk to him & why. If he persists after that, then block.
Ghosting is much worse than rejecting someone. It is cowardly and rude. Men are not so upset by confrontation - that is how problems are solved. Don't give him a hint, be blunt. You can stop communicating with him after that and he knows where he stands.

Rejecting is better. It gets to the point and a person can get over it and move on. Ghosting just drags it out and makes things worse. It's actually better to be harsh and honest. If you liked a guy, would you rather (maybe not right in that moment) know he's not interested and be done with it, or just get ghosted by him and have every possible thought and situation go on in your head about how it must be something else other then ghosting.
I'd say a polite this isn't going to work. And explain just that you don't see a relationship between you two being healthy. And as such you think it would be better to remain friends rather than take a path that could ruin the friendship. Not every "friendzone" has to be with the toxic connotations society has created. Sometimes friendships end up being more like sibilings. And so long as your okay with that and enjoy each others company. Who's to say having guy friends as a friend forever/bro.

Ghosting just leaves the ghosted confused and still wondering if they ghoster was still interested or not. After they realized that they won’t hear from them anytime soon the constant wondering of what they did wrong if anything will drive them nuts. Don’t ghost, no one learns from those.

It's not worse once you wrap your head around the person's lack of social skills. It's very common today to be entirely socially inept and clueless and to hide from responding like a human being. Deficient people do that (and always have - it was previously their avoiding contact or simply not answering their phone/getting a family member to do it all the time)
