In think as a broad generalization, women tend to see the goal in dating as getting married, while men, even if they eventually want to get married, don't necessarily see that as the goal. Women tend to be in more of a hurry if they want to get married and have kids to do it while as young as possible, while men may want to be more established first.

Fairly common, not everyone wants to get married or believes in it, or can afford it.

It's common enough that girls who want marriage need to be upfront about it when the time is right. I'm not saying that on the first date you've got to say 'I need to know you want to eventually get married if things work out between us', but if things go well I do think that's something that's needed to be said (and emphasized) fairly early-ish on.
