Why does this guy keep asking for double dates?

So my guy has a friend that keeps asking us to go out on double dates. I don’t really like the idea of a double date. If the couple were mutual friends it would be a different story. But it’s my guy’s friend - who I’ve never actually met. (He doesn’t live in our city) and the new girl that he’s dating - who I’ve also never met. Even when he was dating his last girl, he would ask about double dating. This time, he wants to go on some romantic camping trip. But I don’t see the romance of an overnight trip with people I’ve never met. What if we don’t vibe? And the guys don’t see each other often, so I’m sure it’ll be more like me being stuck forcing conversation with a girl I’ve never met. Awkward. Why can’t they just hanging out without us? Why does he keep asking for double dates?
