For example if he is type is usually something else but he still locks you down cause he is attracted to you a lot.

That depends on what the rule is. If the rule is bad, then being the exception is good.

I'll give you an example of a good exception:

"All women are cheaters. But not you. You are the exception to prove the rule."
See? That's a good thing.

Now here's a bad one:

"All women are loyal, and never cheat. Except for you. You're the exception to the rule."

Depends entirely upon context on if it is positive or negative. What is being referenced? If the "rule" is that people are lazy and you are the exception, then it's a positive. If the rule is that people are respectful and you are the exception, then it's negative.

What if he never said anything but you can see what his type is based on who he follows plus who he dated. And why would you say it’s a back handed compliment

For example, "I don't usually find Asian men attractive, but you're cute." At that point, I'm cute for an Asian man.

And you’re an extremely attractive Asian would you say that’s still a backhanded compliment
