Guys, Why would a guy end a date by suggesting a second date and then texting the next date to say he doesn't feel a romantic connection?

I went on a first date with a guy I met on a dating app. He was very communicative and we texted for over a week before going out. We met up for coffee and the date lasted about 2 hours. At the end he told me he would text me maybe we could do this again.

The next morning he texted me and said it was nice meeting me but he didn't feel a romantic connection. That's fine but why bother to mention a second date if he wasn't feeling it? Guys, please let me know this thought process.

There are two possible explanations:

1. He felt uncomfortable "rejecting" you in person so he said what he thought you wanted to hear, and later - via text - expressed his true feelings.

2. After your date, he got a response from someone else he met online. Another date with you would have been okay but he would really much prefer to date the other woman.
