The “Talking” stage. Why is it so complicated? Is it even a relationship?

A person has a crush on someone. They initiate contact. Next thing you know, that person messaging that other person. They might’ve asked that other person out, or hung out with that other person. The other person seems to show interest, or they might even like them, whether they admit it or not. They begin messaging each other quite often and the other person is beginning to initiate contact. Then they message each other til the late nights. The other may distant themselves for some time. The other person shows affection while the other seems to have a difficult time showing their emotions. One gives hugs, the other receives. The other person may get a little jealous because one tells the other one they’re going out with someone else, although they’re joking. One may test the other. One may hurt the other without realizing it. They’re in this “talking stage” for a couple of months, maybe more. Why haven’t they gone on a first date yet? Why haven’t they become official? What’s holding the other back?

What is with the talking stage that makes it so difficult and frustrating at times? Have you ever been in the talking stage and have you ever felt like it was going nowhere or in circles? What are your views on the early stage of a possible “relationship”?
