I think that telling anyone you love them requires going out on a limb. It can make someone feel that there is only one correct response which of course would be "and I love you too". If he is not given to displays of affection he might resent being put on the spot. Also it's easy to say "I love you" but not that easy to behave that way and let the recipient know based on your actions. All that being said, replying with ditto or back at you show a poor grasp of the language and a lack of finesse socially
There's nothing wrong with those responses. Would you rather have them say, "I don't love you?" Your "idiot" may just be a person of few words. Accept them for who they are.
