He acted super interested but deleted my phone number? Please read additional details?

I was talking to a guy for a month and we were supposed to go on a date. We had a great connection and he kept saying how excited he was to meet me. The day of the planned date he asked to take a “rain check” because he got some bad news from back home. He eventually told me after I reached out to him to see how he is doing that his dad got a rough diagnosis and he went back where he is from for a few months but he is coming back here. He also said that he missed me. Whenever I reached out to him he said he missed me but he never reaches out to me anymore ( which is understandable, it seems like a rough situation). This last time I reached out to him he made the “sorry who is this? I lost my contacts” excuse which is what I say when I delete someone’s phone number. I said that’s what I say to people when I deleted their number and he didn’t reply so I’m pretty sure he just deleted me from his contacts. Why would he delete my number? I didn’t ask much about the situation because I didn’t want to overstep. Do you think he thinks I didn’t care about him when I didn’t ask details? I know this isn’t the right time to date but why would he just completely erase me from his phone? He acted very interested before all of this and either way I still feel like we were also great friends.
