The problem is that a day or two ago I got things off of my chest and asked him why he told one friend of his I was his girlfriend and also said how he could’ve better told him I was a friend. now he thinks I don’t want to be with him, etc. I don’t feel like I said something wrong, but I really don’t know.

Simply put, you are not proud of him or don't like the fact that he wants others to know that you are his girlfriend.

It seems to me that you would prefer others to regard you and him being just friends rather than a couple. That would simply mean that you are insecure about your relation and that you don't want others to know.

It is indicative that you are unhappy with this relation if you don't want others to know. He, on the other hand, is proud to have you as a girlfriend and is not afraid to let others know it.

You simply put a serious doubt in his mind whether you are actually the right one for him and no, you did not ruin the relationship but you gave it a serious dent.

I mean… yeah, you did ruin things. You made it clear that you don’t want him to claim you. You aren’t proud to be associated with him.

Now, it’s possible that the reason you did that was because the relationship sucked anyway, but you put a lot of distance between you and him.
