Why would a guy say my ex wasn’t the right guy for me?

This guy is my friend and I mentioned to him I broke up with my ex when he asked me if I was seeing anyone. We haven’t caught up for a while and he didn’t know my ex at all, we were talking online and he said ‘well he clearly wasn’t the guy for you’ with a smiley face.
Why would he say that and does it mean anything really?

Were you talking about him? If so what is he suppose to say because he's sitting there wanting to talk and be with you and not hearing about your ex than you are the one putting him in a bad uncomfortable position where you are comparing him to your ex
So talking about your ex is a job for your girlfriends its not a conversation to have with another guy

It just came up because I made some joke about being single and he said he was in a relationship and then asked me if I was seeing someone, then I mentioned I’d broke up recently

Than he's probably just given you some encouragement to ease your self doubt aka a pat on the back, keep your chin up sort of thing

Cuz he is implying that he likes you and that he is glad you are no longer with your ex , he is happy you are single again cuz he is thinking now he can make moves on you

Then he clearly doesn’t care about the relationship he is in if he is flirting with you , But you have to be careful with that because he might just try to get you in bed and tell you things you want to hear unless he dumps his girlfriend to be with you
