Why would a man tell his parents about the first date you had and why’d he boast about you?

That’s the message I received after telling the man that I could not have a 2nd date with him. (That one that I met 3 days ago.)

I felt flattered and honored to hear that he told his parents about me, and I felt a bit guilty that I had to turn down his interest but I had to do what I had to do right?… I am happy he’s not too upset with me.

I am now done with dating for a while.

Usually things don’t escalate to ‘meet the family’ unless they can see themselves with you long term.

I appreciate that he saw me in a light as I’d like to be seen and I appreciate that he realized my true personality.

I think I did well, in a way that I made him feel heard, I listened carefully and encouraged him to do believe in himself, as he was a bit depressed…

I tried to make that date a positive influence for him.

But it must be a two way street, and I feel like at this moment we don’t complement each other. As I didn’t get my needs met. I didn’t feel heard, I felt like it was me who constantly had to listen.

Just because you may have made a wonderful partner for him, doesn’t mean that he would have made a wonderful partner for you.

I’ve dated a handful of people like that where I was great at fulfilling their needs, but they weren’t so great at fulfilling mine.

It takes a certain level of care, attentiveness, and consideration to always be mindful of your partner’s thoughts, feelings, and needs.

But, it can be difficult to find that reciprocated, as most people are self-serving.

I'm not sure you even want my opinion anymore, but if you do my thought about this is that this is a really manipulative move on his part. You should be very careful and probably not even be talking to this person. What he said to you is really inappropriate and particularly inappropriately familiar. I doubt that he seriously told his parents about you unless his judgment is really even more impaired than I think it is.

This is a valid concern. It’s difficult to assess someone fully after just one date. If what he said was not in the spirit of true desperation, there’s always the possibility of manipulation. If that’s the case, it’s possible that he tried to sway with flattery and guilt.

I think what he meant is he told his parents about the fact that he met me and he boasted and his parents wanted to see me.

He didn’t mean he wanted me to meet his parents which would be quite weird.

But I think you are right, he might have wanted me to feel guilty, after I told him I couldn’t meet him again and that’s why he made it up probably, which I felt a but guilty but also relieved because I didn’t want to meet again.

If he tried to manipulate guilt in me, that’s even better of a reason that I said no.

I feel relieved that he won’t expect to have any more dates with me.
