Got hit with the “I’m not in the right mindset atm to continue the relationship” Is that always an excuse, or I should believe his words?

We met on a dating app. He seemed pretty serious about me at first, came to visit me twice within 2 months, asked me to be his girlfriend. A little bit before the last visit I could sense he had less time for me due to professional reasons (he’s about to open a business in my country) When he came, he was a bit distracted, and after leaving sent me the breaking up message.

Damn sis, that sucks. From my guy perspective, when a dude hits you with that "not in the right mindset" line, it could mean a few things:

- It could be legit - Sometimes dudes just get super stressed with work/life stuff and their heads aren't in the game for a relationship. We're usually not great at handling stress and emotions.

- It could be a soft let down - Rather than admit he's losing interest, he uses the stress excuse as a gentler way to end it without confrontation.

- Doubts crept in - All the uncertainty and distraction with his business could've given him space to doubt if you're the one long term. Opening up creates anxiety.

At this point, assuming he's being truthful about work stress is really the kindest interpretation. But I'd be wary he may not come back to it fully later. My advice would be don't wait around too long hoping he changes his mind - start moving on.

If it's meant to be, maybe down the road when things settle he'll want to try again properly. But protect your heart sis - don't let him string you along in limbo. You deserve someone all-in!

Honestly you could hit him with a “I wish you the best in your business and it was great to get to know you, but we should go our separate ways” or however would be appropriate and just move on from him. People make time for the people they want to spend time with, it doesn’t matter what is going on in their lives. Doesn’t make either of you bad people. If it is meant to be he will come back around, and if it isn’t that is okay too. I wish you the best with the next one
