Do men lie when they say they want to marry you?

Okay so this has happened to me twice already. First the father of my child always said he wanted children with me years before having one. He also would say how he wanted to marry me and spend the rest of our lives together but things never worked out between us.

Fast forward to my most previous relationship. The guy I was seeing constantly talked about how he wanted to marry me and take care of me and he always talked about our future. But just like the last.. we didn't last.

So that brings me back to the question. Do men really mean it? Or do they just say that to every woman they are dating?

in my opinion a normal/decent guy will tend to shy away from marriage generally, until they meet the right girl, then they will ask her, blurting it out sometimes and truly mean what they say (and typically it will be an innimant desire for it to happen soon, not some "in time, when their ready" deal).

That said, there's a big difference between someone saying "I think I want to marry you" with heart and "Marry Me!" with soul. The first is either just an indicator of how the feel you might be seen in the future or plain weasle words, said with design to entice. When someone is truly are wanting to Marry someone else they want to ask them at the right time and in the right way (you don't want to risk a no), talking about marriage without following up right away is a setup hell for yourself and partner.

there's only been one woman in my life I've wanted to marry and she explicitly said "don't say that again" when I said "Marry Me" and I've kept that word.

I would say, chalk it down to the men in your life. Not sure how to avoid that type of men, American culture seems to breed a lot of those.

For me it's serious business. I've never said that to a woman I've ever broken up with. I've only said it to three women my entire life. The first broke up with me after we graduated from university and our relationship became long distance. The second actually broke off our wedding engagement. The third, I married and have been married to for 14 years now.

I also only said it after purchasing an engagement ring and proposing marriage. I don't use words lightly. I never even say "I love you" to women unless I'm ready to die on their behalf.

It might depend on the character of the man. For example, I've never broken a promise in my whole life. I would rather die than break a promise. That said, because of that, I almost never promise anything. When people ask me, "Will you promise [...]" I say, "No, I can't make that promise."

I"m sure that some men lie about wanting to marry women, but most wouldn't say something like that unless they meant it because of how big of a deal it is to say something like that.
