Has anyone had a guy asking you to be his girlfriend by saying, "Would you like trying to be my girlfriend?"?

I can say that I know very young shy guy friends who have phrased it that way (two of them, though they where 15 and 20).

In my experiences it comes from a place of insecurity, they say "trying" because they feel that you'll likely want to split up with them (e. g. they doubt their attraction for you). They see themselves as the girl rejecting them so setup their ask so they acknowledge that likelyhood of rejection (its NOT a good thing, but they where two sweet people, and one of them is now married, but not to the girl he said that to, she politely declined).

That all presumes they've said that timidly. If they said it brashly and with bravado, emphising 'trying' I can see how that might seem to suggest they think you would struggle to be their girlfriend (in that very unlikely interperataion, I'd suggest you respond "I make an exceptional girlfriend, no need to try, and I prefer better guys" heh. Though hope its the first, since that would be a real jerk way to say it).

I just feel like most people just ask it as it is, "Do you want to be my girlfriend?" or "Would you like to be my girlfriend?"

I mean he still is the one who initiating dates and drives almost an hour to my place just to come over. He's a nice guy and I admire he is not the regular player who flirts and shows off, he's more quiet to himself. He admitted he liked me then I told him same, then I asked him what he wanted to do about it and call it, he said whatever I'm comfortable with calling it, then went on to say, "do you want to try being my girlfriend?". For some reason it's kinda stuck in the back of my mind there's not an actual real "relationship". Most guys, even shy guys just use the original phrase "Do you want to be my girlfriend?" (Like they actually want to or not) Not with the word "try". Especially since he pursued me. I texted him asking about someone we worked with who was acting fishy about more info on the other guy, then he struck up conversation and kept going and asked to go on dates and such. I'd understand if it was his first girlfriend and he was such a a shy introvert maybe he didn't know how to word things, but he said he's had two other girlfriends before.
