Does Infidelity alter the Mind?

There are numerous articles that highlight the effects of brain chemicals and how they correlate to alterations in brain activity and fidelity. But what of the person - does he or she change? Can they ever be faithful again?

The person has to change from intentful, loving and loyal to passive, self-seeking and resentful. This transformation on average does not happen over night. After years of rejection and deprivation, it takes little wonder as to where it leads.

You don't seek what you already have, you seek what you lack. In most affairs it's intimacy, warmth, safety and sometimes resources.

No one is suggesting that trauma doesn’t have an effect on the brain, and bad relationships can indeed traumatize you even if it’s not something violent. As a response to trauma people find ways to cope, some good, some bad. Traumatizing the person who traumatized you by cheating on them is kind of universally seen as a really shitty thing to do in general. It’s not a healthy response for the person in the bad relationship that wants something they’re not getting anymore, and if cheating has become that person’s coping mechanism for finding what they want when they’re not getting it in a relationship, it is exceptionally difficult to overcome that pattern that has now been imprinted on your gray matter in your brain. That’s why there’s the phrase “Once a cheater, always a cheater.”

Yes. It does. It also can be the result of an altered mind. There is an absolute correlation between PTSD and several potentially destructive behaviors, infidelity being a significant one of them.
