Am I overreacting, or is this weird?

So I matched with this guy (36M) on a dating app. I’m 24F. We were talking about meeting up, and he suggested the outlet mall. I asked if it was just us, and he said, “Well, I’m not shopping — my friend is, and I don’t meet people alone.”

That immediately threw me off. Like… you’re a grown man, mid-30s, and you need another guy with you to meet a woman for the first time? I understand safety, but usually that’s something women do, not men. To me it just felt strange and immature.

I ended up telling him I wasn’t interested anymore. I just can’t take a man seriously if he shows up to a first link with a chaperone.

Am I overreacting, or is that as weird as I think it is?

You should have asked him why he does that. Sometimes it's not that a man is afraid to meet a woman, but rather he's scared that it's a catfish and he might get jumped and robbed by a bunch of guys or something. However, meeting in a public place should eliminate that risk for him.

I don’t think your choice was an under or overreaction, it was just fair. In all honesty I’m not sure what to make of a man his age who won’t meet up with a woman for the first time without another guy with him. He should be trying to take you on a proper first date, instead it’s as if he’s treating you as a side quest to his plans so that if he doesn’t like what he sees, hears etc he can use his friend’s shopping/errands as a scapegoat.

I personally don't know any girls that do dating apps, I also never have, so I really don't know if safety is a HUGE concern but I honestly don't think that I, as a woman, would even take a chaperone. Us meeting somewhere in public and maybe a friend knowing where I am would be good enough. That's not a good look on his part lol
